Weight loss after surgery.

Posted , 5 users are following.

I weighed myself the night before surgery and again 5 days later when I got home and my weight was identical. I have read that the replacement hip adds more weight than is taken away in bone weight. The replacement weighs 3-5 pounds so it is common to lose weight in the hospital but weight the same.

I am now 3 weeks post op and have lost 9 pounds. Even though my activity level has been very low I am still losing weight. I thought I was eating well but still havent gotten my full appetite back since surgery.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes Chris I did I lost 8lb and everyone was commenting on how much weight I'd lost. Like you I wasn't sure why as I was spending most of my days resting. I'm now 12 weeks post op and unfortunately have now started to put it back on. I too didn't have my full appetite until about 5 weeks after op. X

Hi Chris I've had 2 hips done in last 6 months & asked surgeon at last 6 week check up how much they weigh & he said they weigh no more than the bone he removed from me. And he also said if I'd gained a few pounds it wasn't his fault 😀

This is what I read on the subject. Since I was in the hospital for 5 days, hardly ate anything while I was there, and weighed the same when I got home, it seems accurate.

"The parts weigh about 3 to 5 pounds. The bone removed during hip replacement weighs a little less. So, you may gain a few pounds of body weight as a result of hip replacement surgery."

Following surgery your basic calorie requirements increase by up to double. This is because of the healing that your body is doing. Therefore you will lose weight if you don't eat to replace what you are using. You also need to ensure you are eating sufficient quantities of the healing nutrients especially protein, calcium etc. Once the healing has finished (or slowed) then calorie need returns to normal. Personally I've had no problem with appetite and I haven't lost any weight (much to my disgust!).

I weighed myself a month ago then weighed myself a couple if days before my surgery. Some how i had managed to lose a stone in weight. Considering i barely did anything at the time and couldnt exercise i have no idea how i managed to do that. Maybe it was because i was eating less ajd cutting out more unhealthy things
