Weight loss and moveable lump under my jaw/top of neck - is there a connection?

Hi, I'm a 19 year old female and i've noticed that I've lost at least 5-6kg (~60kg - 54kg) of weight since the middle of march. Initially in march i intended to lose weight by eating less and exercising more, however this didn't last for long and although I was eating a little less it doesn't warrent how much weight I've lost since then. Since coming home from university at the end of june I weighed myself and was shocked by my weight loss! Since seeing the weight loss in June I've eaten a lot more but am finding it difficult to actually put on weight (but haven't lost anymore weight).

I also found a moveable lump under my jaw, it is painless and there is only one of them. It is roughly 1cm in size (if not a few mm bigger).

I feel as if i find it hard to breathe in but I've been looking up a lot of symptoms on the internet and am not sure if this is just my mind telling me that I'm having breathing difficulties!

Please, if anyone has any answers to put my mind at ease (or not) I would be so greatful, I am really worried and anxious.

    Hi!

I'm 19 too, and for the past 2 months I've had a huge lump on the right side of my neck, kind of below and behind my ear. It's not very movable and feels a bit like a very full water filled balloon. I went to the doctor and she said it might be an infection and gave me some penicillin. That didn't work so she referred me to an ENT specialist at the hospital.

I've spent the past few weeks freaking out, convinced I have lymphoma. I've been struggling to sleep or eat or do my uni work. I had a massive crying fit at work the other day too. I was also convinced that my throat was feeling super tight and constricted.

But anyway, I saw the ENT specialist yesterday;  she stuck a needle in the lump and loads of green pus came out. I've never been so relieved to see such a disgusting sight! She said that the lump was probably just a branchial cyst, and nothing really to worry about. They're a genetic thing and only become visible in your late teens/early 20's.

I think that my throat felt tight because of the anxiety of not knowing what it was.  Now I know what was wrong with me, my throat feels normal.

Hopefully the lump and your weight are unrelated. The doctor I saw yesterday said that if the lump is moveable, it probably isn't lymphoma. But please go to the doctors and they can put your mind at rest. It's better getting a proper diagnosis instead of freaking out smile

      Hi vicki96465,

Thanks for the message. I was going through some really bad health anxiety at the time. 3 years on from that post I'm still here and it was nothing bad!

Just goes to show what anxiety can do to you.

Glad everyone was OK with yours!
