Weight loss and under active thyroid

Posted , 7 users are following.

I was diagnosed with an underactive thryoid little under 2 months ago and starting taking 50mg of Levothyroxine which has now increased to 75mg. Since January, like many others, have started to try and shift some weight. I've been in the gym 4/5 times a week for at least an hour and have been watching what I eat yet I've not lost a single pound. It is driving me crazy! I would just like to know if anyone has any tips or had more success with weightloss after being on Levo for longer. smile

Re diet, try eating fewer carbohydrates and more protein (e.g. chicken) and vegetables. Porridge made with skimmed milk in the morning is good for you providing you can ewt gluten (try to get used to it without sugar etc), is filling and is low in calories.

Flour products and sugar and alcohol...reducing to almost zero and I lost weight. Without exercise.  But our bodies all different.

Maybe not worry about it? Maybe body hanging on if you worry about it?

That's similar to how i lost weight. I didn't eat chocolate or sweets either.

Try not to get too disheartened - it's early days yet with levo. Console yourself with the knowledge that you've stopped putting weight on. Most people in the early stages put on weight until they get the dose right. It's likely that you've managed to avoid this by all the effort you're putting in at the gym.

    Hello Zjr:

Yes, I lost 32 pounds slowly doing walking and watching carbs like a hawk.  I do not eat many carbs and it has helped.

I started walking nothing fancy, just walking and it helps. Also drink a lot of water and you feel fuller also.

I also do not eat much dairy and that can help in losing some weight. I eat salads a lot. Fish is good like baked Salmon and it is good for your heart.

So this has helped me los esome but your TSH needs to be in good shape and you will be able to lose the weight maybe not as fast as another but you can do it!

    Regards,

    Shelly

I totally understand. I first went to doc over a year ago as I couldnt lose weight despite diet and exercise. Found to have subclinical hypo, and started on 25 mcg Levothyroxine. Im now on 125mcg, swim every second day, walk lots and Im very active generally, eat a healthy diet and I cant budge the weight. I have toned up a bit, but do feel very bloated and look fatter some days. Its so frustrating. Im finding too much walking difficult as I have lumps on my achilles tendons which get sore after too much strenous walking, cant even think of running, cross trainer etc. I will not give in and have pestered my doc so much that I have now a referral to an endo. But I know that it pot luck as to whether they are forward thinking or just going to look at my tsh as tell me to bog off. Someone on Thyroid UK told me not to over exercise as it produces too much cortisol. Lets hope we both find a solution and get back to feeling human again soon. X

Feeling bloated and looking fatter can be a food intolerance - can you link it to anything you've eaten?

Hi Barbara, quite possibly carbs. Its so hard as Ive been told to cut down on fat due to a slightly raised cholesterol. Think I may have to resort to a food diary?

I believe there is a link between being under medicated (or incorrectly medicated) and high cholesterol. Try eating chicken and fish and vegetables. I've had to do this due to food allergies and intolerances - I lost loads of weight. I can't eat carbs, grains, fruit, dairy, soya.

Food diary is a good idea. Remember symptoms can occur several hours or even a day later, so put down date & time of food eaten, and date & time of symptoms.
