Weight loss following surgery

I am 7 weeks post hip replacement and doing really well. Just one small niggle though. I lost 2 kilos during the first week home which didn't worry me as I didn't have much appetite. However, I have been eating normally since then and the weight loss stopped. I had gone from 57k to 55k. No problem. I was glad when it didn't go any further but I weighed this morning and I was 54.7k. Not a lot, I know, but I'm slim to start with so don't want to lose any more. Is this just my body demanding more calories during the healing process? Has anyone else experienced this?

How are your exercises and stretches going?

Going really well Larry. I could probably stretch a lttle more than I do but I'm still taking care not to dislodge anything. I can just about put a pop sock on but can't bend far enough to tie laces or cut toe nails. How about you?

Weight loss is perfectly normal, as is loss of appetite. I didn't eat for three weeks, but their were complications in the theater. The operated leg will swell, but it does go down. Just make sure that what you eat is of good value to the body. When I finally started to eat, I ate quite a lot of spinach and asparagus topped with a poached egg, and sprinkle of grated Parmesan. I thew out the ready meals, as I didn't fancy them, and they were very expensive.
You are probably using a lot of calories to heal, hence the weight loss.
Keep going, you will stabillise when your body is ready.

Hi there,
I couldn't eat for about five days after the op, just had no appetite. Great for me as I really need to lose about a stone anyway. Imagine my disappointment when I weighed myself after returning home and found I'd only lost about twp pounds! Googled the weight of metal prosthetics and it stated that tey can weigh up to 5lbs!!!!
So I am now trying to watch my diet, still not as hungry as I used to be before the surgery but I am now one month post op.
I guess everybody's different. Try to eat good carbs for energy.
Good luck! 👍🏼

You are probably right, your body will use any 'spare energy' to repair itself, but keep an eye on it, you don't want to loose too much.
Me on the other hand, I need to lose some more weight .....

I was on a weight reduction program before my bicycle accident which snapped the top of my femur. I had to wait 5 days in traction before the ball joint replacement because of my blood thinning meds (polycythemia vera), and ten days in hospital post op, again to balance my blood meds.
I did not like the veggy diet (hospital policy) and so survived on McD's brought in for me. When I went home, I had gained 1.8Kg, but lost 5Kg over the next 9 days which was a scary amount of weight. After that, my weight settled into a normal pattern of weight loss.
I put the loss down to fluid retention, as I was peeing like a racehorse, day and night every two hours or so.
Weight reduction is never constant and predictable, it happens in cycles (4 per month, male and female). If you hit one of these cycles, whether you are dieting or not, your weight will vary, so I would say that what you experienced was quite normal. I am not an expert, this is just my experience in weight loss.
