Weight loss with 'acute pancreatitis'

Hi !

I got acute pancreatitis back in January and since then my weight has been dropping almost every day or so . So far I have lost over a stone in weight and am now beginning to think  where will it all end? I can afford to lose some weight, but at this rate, it wont be long until  I may be underweight than overweight. Has anyone else had the same experience and if so how did you deal with it? Thanks for the info.

Hi Pete, I joined this forum because of my dad, who has had pancreatitis for 13 years, and lives on massive doses of Creon.

As for the weight loss, bearing in mind you're meant to be on a minimal fat diet ( almost zero) that doesn't help the weight loss but my dad was never told to go on a low fat diet! In fact he's type 1 diabetic, insulin dependant, and the told him to eat anything he likes, to bulk him up? He has full fat milk,  cakes, biscuits, full fat cheese and loves nothing better than fish and chips! But whilst eating for England, he's lost some 4-5 stone in the last year.

so it seems it's an inevitable symptom . Anyone know how to change this?

      Hi Marianne,

Thanks for your reply. Was your Dad's weight stable during the last 13 years since he was diagnosed with pancreatitis? Has he been taking creon during that time as well? That is an awful lot of weight to lose in one year. At the moment I seem to be heading for a loss of two stone in one year. My doctor is considering putting me on creon. Thanks!

Hi Pete, about 13 years ago he was about 14 stone, and fluctuated between 13 -14 stone, but I believe that was kept up by an abundance of fatty sweet foods. But over the last two years it's been dropping off him, and I by sheer accident, talking to a medic pal in Canada, found out that the Crean dose should be prescribed based on weight, food intake, and stools. So I went back to the consultant... Who the miraculously decided to increase Dads Dose by some 60%. But never was he told to avoid fatty foods! They are now considering increasing his dose again, because as I say, he's about 10.00 stone now. Make sure when you start taking it, you check to see what you can and can't eat. Good luck

I too lost weight after diagnosis of CP.  No problem with the first 5-7 pounds but ultimately lost 25 pounds.  After getting on Creon and working with my diet, I've gained back about 5 pounds.  A little thin but OK.

Keep working with your diet, eat frequent small meals, hopefully it will straighten out.
