Weird face pain

No I do not have the typical sharp shooting pain. No I do not have numbness. But I have had pain come and go in my face- mostly left side. Sometimes the right. I have had sinus scans/MRI/and dental CTs. Been told no I don’t have a sinus infection however my sinus area hurts. Been told maybe it’s teeth- pulled 2 teeth. Did nothing for pain and the last extraction made my pain worse. Freaking out. I complained to oral surgeon and said are you sure it is healing correctly? I just feel throbbing pain and of course all looks fine on an X-ray. Now since the last extraction I am getting nose pain. Tooth 12 is close to nose. Dental specialists don’t know why I am getting nose pain. The tooth had contact with the sinus. I had MRI recently nothing showed up except mild edema from extraction site. I feel weird in the nasal area ever since extraction... what the heck! So I am miserable with what the heck is happening to me thoughts. I am going to another sinus specialist soon. Anyone ever get weird nose pain on and off.  My other pain is achy upper jaw. Sometimes both sides. Been to a ton of oral surgeons, sinus drs- losing my mind. Pain sucks

Alryk, first I would go to my primary Doctor and have some blood testing done, the jaw could be TMJ the Dentist can make a mouth piece you wear at night to help with jaw pain. sinus can cause teeth to  hurt upper one's and cause pain right and left, try steam form shower, warm bath cloth if its sinus will help, saline washout twice a day, maybe you will know which direction to go. good luck

      Thanks!

I have been all over with drs- had blood work up... normal, had tons of scans. None of my teeth hurt. The recent extraction has added the new pain of nose pain- weird! Right above the extraction site I had throbbing pain on and off and then oddly enough i have recently been getting on and off nose pain. I just don’t fit in with typical tmj and nerve pain but the drs can’t see infection on scans. It’s messed up 😖

I had nose pain after an extraction and severe facial neuralgia.  Nothing showed on two X Rays.   I gave up going back to the dentist for help. In the end, a lump on my gum appeared after months. It turned out to be an infection that was coming from my root.  Root canal work and an antibiotic dressing cleared it.

Scary! Glad you got it sorted. Well I just started the nose pain about a few weeks or so after the extraction. It started off as happening once or twice throughout the day. So I thought hmmm is this nerve related? But lately it’s most of the day just agony.  I can’t deal with this anymore! This chronic pain with my face and getting X-rays with everything looking just peachy! Meanwhile I am in agony. Scared that I need to be on something.  I was on 2 rounds of medicine a couple of weeks after the extraction and it didn’t help with the pain.  It’s scary you just want answers.

Extractions can cause infections.  I had a horrible infection days after an extraction and no painkiller touched the pain.  I had to have antibiotics before they could begin the root treatment that I also needed for another tooth.  Unfortunately, the root treatment went very badly because I was not given enough anaesthetic and I was allergic to the little I was given. I was left in horrendous pain which took quite a bit of time to settle down.

Well right now the infection isn’t showing up on an x-ray and not in my mouth either so it’s hard to get anyone to take you seriously. I have been to 4 oral surgeons and a dental CT scan and an MRI- so what do you do if you feel like something is wrong but no one is listening? I had pain prior to extraction in upper jaw- this extraction added new pain.  So I am stuck in hell right now.

Initially, I ignored the problem since no one was listening until the infection finally showed up.and I had to get it dealt with. At first I thought it was neuralgia.  I would try and see someone else until you get a diagnosis.  Have you tried going to a dental hospital?  If you feel pain like this, it could be an infection that hasn’t shown up.  Scans don’t always pick them up.  This happened to me on second occasion too.

I just went to a dental teaching school in Richmond- saw an oral surgeon. I showed them a dental CT scan I just had taken earlier that month. I didn’t ask for another scan because I am getting radiated left and right.  I just had an mri as well 3 weeks prior to appt. so like u said it takes time to show up.  I was on 2 rounds of antibiotics last month. Which did nothing. The nose pain has become more of an issue. I felt it is coming from the recent extracted tooth. I feel weird in the bone where he drilled and I don’t know if the bone healed good or not. The dental ct scan was taken after the tooth was removed which showed it looking ok. I am going to a sinus dr soon. I hate this which freaking dr is the one to help me- no one is so far

If you feel something in the bone where he drilled, this sounds like the pain is coming from the extraction site.   The pain in your nose could be referred pain rather than sinus related.  Have you seen a maxillofacial surgeon? Maybe try that first and ask about a dry tooth socket which can be very painful.

Yes my thoughts exactly- I mentioned dry socket a long time ago and got brushed off. Saw 4 yes 4 oral surgeons that brush off something is wrong because the healing site looks good.  I just came from an oral surgeon and he referred me to a facial pain specialist in the same building and I can’t see her until the end of October. Ugh. I am going to keep on pursuing. I am not giving up. I know my body and something isn’t right. I got intouch with the original oral surgeon and sent an email to contact me back. Because the healing site looks good and the dental CT scan that I took a month after the extraction came back fine it is hard to get taken seriously.

Ugh the thing that sucks is this was an added problem. My original problem never got solved. I don’t need this crap right now.

I think the maxilofacial specialist may be able to help.  He or she may take further X Rays.

Yes I saw 4 of them. I just saw one last week. I will definitely keep at it and keep looking for answers. I do think I have something going on more extraction related than sinus. I still have appt with sinus dr anyway coming up so going to go anyway. This way after he says it’s not a sinus thing I will raise hell with an oral surgeon to open it up and see what’s up. Fun times!

      Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis usually starts with coldlike symptoms such as a runny, stuffy nose and facial pain. It may start suddenly and last 2-4 weeks.

Subacute sinus inflammation usually lasts 4 to 12 weeks.

Chronic inflammation symptoms last 12 weeks or longer.

Recurrent sinusitis happens several times a year.

Sinuses that are healthy are filled with air.  If they are blocked with fluid, germs can get in and cause infection.  Do you have a blocked, runny nose with the facial pain?

I can breathe fine and no runny nose. I see a sinus specialist on Tuesday I can’t wait. I believe there is a connection to the recent extraction but my nose hurts and I wanna go to a sinus specialist. I am seeing the same oral surgeon I saw last week in a couple of weeks. I am being persistent!

But I can say for sure this nose pain is more constant now. I started out coming on here and there being weird. But last 2 weeks it’s more constant. I do feel like it’s from the recent extraction. It’s hard for oral surgeons to open up the site if everything looks like it’s healing good yet I always felt like it didn’t heal correctly. I had an mri 5 weeks after extraction and it showed mild focal edema. When I look up edema it says it can cause pain. I wonder if it has something to do with that. Believe me I have dr’s lined up. I won’t give up on all my facial pain weirdness. Because I have pain in the upper jaw prior to extraction the drs roll it into that pain and aren’t seeing that this is NEW crap since extraction. My nose never bothered me.

Anyway- I think about going to a hospital like maybe I should go ASAP- but since I have my sinus appt on Tuesday which is very close I am trying to hold out.

I would go the hospital and not try to hold out. From what you are describing, it sounds lke a problem related to your extraction rather than your sinuses.

I had intermittent pain on the outside of my nose similar to the mourh pain but mlder.  Have you got any further forward with a diagnosis?

Mine is intermittent as well. Varies in intensity and is on the bridge of my nose, sides of nose feels outside of nose. My nose is sore if I move my nose around.

I saw a sinus specialist blames it on nerves- at my regular ent office now going to fill in my regular dr. About sinus specialist. Ugh it’s annoying I see a face pain dr this week as well and that’s who the oral surgeon and sinus dr want me to see. But it’s annoying I have a crapload if issues on the left side of face and this crap I don’t need

The nose pain could be referred pain from the tooth extraction site.  It may be that nerves have got inflammed.  I had an inflammed nerve after a badly done filling and I needed to have the filling removed and an anaesthetic dressing put in to calm the pain until the filling could be put back.

The other possibility is neuralgia which can only be managed but not cured.

Thanks for all your replies! I do know it seems where tooth was where dr drilled bone it feels weird when I swallow. Not in throat in the bone area. I asked sinus dr about it and he blew it off. It’s funny how we take ourselves seriously but the drs dismiss it like they understand how you feel- make it no big deal. So yes possibility that nerve is inflamed. I truly hope that’s the case! My mri that was taken 5 weeks after extraction didn’t show anything wrong. My dental CT scan didn’t show anything either so I will have to get more scans. It’s expensive trying to figure this out!!! Glow some more. I will definitely reply an update. I thank you for your input.

Hopefully you can get it sorted; ask about nerve inflammation and hopefully they can give you a dressing on the extraction site for the pain if it is that.
