Weird sudden anxiety problems.

Hello everybody, I'm new here. My name is Jesse. I'm 20 and I live here in the States. I've been to two therapists and have been diagnosed with anxiety/panic disorder, and mild depression. I've been on 40mg of Citalopram for several several months.

For the past couple of months I've been feeling very "off". I know it's very common in people whom have anxiety to have that feeling but I just need to know that I'm not entirely crazy in the head! I've been feeling like I'm forgetting EVERYTHING. It seems like my memory is getting horrible and sometimes it even seems like I'm forgetting how to speak in general. It's very scary sometimes. Also, I'm mixing up my words. Earlier today I was cleaning out my water bottle and was asked what I was doing, the words that came out were, "I'm cleaning out my wottle botter." I've been doing this more and more frequently. It's really starting to bug and get to me. I feel like I've got some kind of brain defect or something even though I'm sure it's just my anxiety getting to me.

I took out the garbage the other day and when I walked back into the house, it literally felt like I had never been there before in my life. I just can't stand this. I hate it.

I'm in the states too. Did your medicine work for you in the beginning?

Did you start with a smaller dose then slowly increased per your doctor's order, or did you start with 40mg?

I did start with a small dose. I think I started at either 10 or 20mg. It's been quite a while. I was first started on Prozac which was HORRIBLE for me.

Prozac and citalopram are both serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and increase the amount of serotonin in the brain. Perhaps you are getting too much serotonin. I'm thinking 40mg is too much medicine for you. Especially since your memory is affected. Not quite sure about the touble speaking, but that happened to me too. First though, often side effects are solved by lowering the dose a bit. Maybe ask for 30mg? I don't know if they come in that dose. Then see if the coverage for anxiety remains the same or needs a little boost. At that point you would then call your doctor. He could easily add another med to go with it that is not more SSRI. Often bupropion (Wellbutrin) which works on different neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and dopamine) than citaloptram, is used in combination SSRIs.

I completely recalled something of which you mentioned. I did have trouble speaking correct words. My sentences were jumbled. I think for better articulation we, with lightning brain speed, think of what to say, start speaking simultaneously, and end sentences without too many uhs and ahs, but my motor function of speaking would get ahead of itself, and then I would blurt out words first that I meant to say later in the sentence. I would stumble through the rest of the sentence correcting myself. My therapist said perhaps it's that I have so much more exuberance, now that I have more serotonins. My thinking may adjust. I told her not only that, but I would just say things out loud, like "nice ass" and similar comments, but not just under my breath, louder, like I was forgetting to keep a respectful volume. LUcky that never got me in trouble, but it was weird. I figured that would adjust, which it did.

Again, you may have to adjust your meds if this has been happening for awhile. Depends on when the last time of increase (to 40mg) though. At the time of increase to 40mg, it may have been a touch too much and no adjustment has occurred over a long period. However if you have been taking 40mg since 2 weeks ago, perhaps it will subside soon.

I really appreciate the response. I'm sorry about the panic attacks you've had today. I truly hope you're feeling better. It means a lot knowing that in one way or another, I'm nit alone in what I'm feeling.

I was on 20mg of ciatlopram for about 6 months I think they worked for me for a while but then they seemed like they weren't so one day I just completely stopped taking them and I feel the same as if I was when on them so my opinion is they don't work to well, but I do have the same problem getting words out I think it just maybe be a little effect that many people have who are suffering with anxiety, I would worry about that, just slow down and think about what your gonna say worked for me

Are you sleeping? I was only on meds for around 3 months before I came off them. It wasn't that I was brave or anything,as I would have taken anything to feel normal,it was just they did nothing whatsoever for me. My symptons were all down to sleep deprivation. I started to hallucinate,I didn't see the Grim Reaper or Betty Boop,I started to see red traces (like a sparkler when you wave it around). I remember  being locked out of my home becasue I couldn't find the lock.Once you get a grip of you anxiety these syptoms will ease and eventually go,but convincing yourself it's anxiety that's tricking you body and not some deadly illness is easier said than done.

Ask your doctor if you can try Lithium. If it's good enough for Richard Dreyfuss and for Bill Oddie in the UK then it's good enough for you!
