Went to ER for pain in left side, was diagnosed with constipation, but still having pain

I went to the ER because for the past week I have had strange symptoms. I have been constipated many times before but nothing like this. I'm not really bloated and I am going to the bathroom but it's 3 or 4 small pellets at a time and as soon as I get done, there's a pressure to go again.

I was having pain in my lower back, side-all the way up under my ribs, sometimes the pain gravitated towards the other side and middle of my back, I was having dull cramping in my pelvis and some minor pain in my vagina. I never once considered constipation because I didn't think it caused trouble in all those areas. I put up with this over a week, at one point I had pain in my legs even! This only lasted for a day though. Also, I wiped and had light pink blood followed by stringy pink discharge a few days later. I am not pregnant and I am on the depo shot.

I did lots of research online as I have never had anything like this before. and after symptom checkers everything said endo. I am 24 years old and prior to depo I used to get irregular, heavy periods with awful cramps. I was on the birth control pill but that sent my body in a tizzy.

So after my ER visit today they pressed on my belly, which hurt in some spots mostly the left side and they sent me for a CT scan. Apparently the CT came back clear, just showed bad constipation. I don't know much about endometriosis but after lots of my research is it possible I could have this since I have had many of the symptoms? I think I read somewhere that endo can cause constipation. Before this happened, I was going pretty regularly. I eat a fiber yogurt everyday and drink plenty of water.

Hi April, Im sorry you are feeling like this. Yes it does sound like endo to me and no it wont show up on a ct scan.

What you need to do is see your GP and ask to be referred to a gynaecologist in particular an endemetriosis specialist if possible as you have been advised that you have endo and want it confirming.

Im afraid its a long drawn out process getting it diagnosed but realising that is what you think you have is the first step. Depending how severe and in what areas it is hopefully they will be able to put you on hormone treatment that will help in the meantime. Good luck hun. its a horrible disease but theres alot of support on here from others knowing exactly what you're going through x

I have an appointment with an OBGYN next week. They are checking for ovarian cysts and endometriosis. As far as the constipation is concerned, I went some this morning and was feeling better a little but the relief didn't last long and within an hour I had a pain in my hip area again. This can't be solely constipation!

I had really bad constipation before and had endo on bowel but started taking a spoonful of flaxseed in porridge every day and a 9bar and this sorted the problem straight away and havent had a problem since.

      Good luck next week x

Hi April, I am so sorry to hear this. I am not sure about weather its endo or not but here are some ways to get rid of constipation: (you didnt get hermorroids did you?)

    1) you could try eating couple of Prunes or prune juice on an empty stomatch (natural laxative!)

    2) you could aslo try ACV mixed with Blackstrap molasses in hot water.

    3) Make smoothies with coconut milk + flax seeds

    4) oatmeal breakfast helps a lot (not the pre-packaged ready to make ones - they are full of sugar!) 1/4 cup oats + coconut milk + flax seeds + soaked chia seeds + dates (and/or your choice of sweetner)

    hope this helps.

No, I have never had a hermorroid before and haven't with this either. They gave me magnesium citrate to take and it helped me go last night but I've done nothing today. I felt mild relief after going last night but within an hour I got the sharp pain in my side again. I took more citrate today thinking maybe I wasn't done, but there has been no effect.

I had this prior to my endo diagnosis. I could eat a family pack of prunes and it wouldn't make a difference! I asked to be referred. Definitely does not show on scans although I had 20cm ovarian cyst. Went in to have it removed and woke up to be told widespread endo that had fused ovaries, womb, bladder and bowel together hence all my pain. I'm not saying that you have it, it could be constipation and I remember being given a sweet syrup laxative in hospital after having 3rd degree tare after my first baby.... that worked well!! Maybe a trip to pharmacist to see if they have anything for that first. I wish you well xx

I have been told I have ovarian cysts before. When I was diagnosed with acid reflux disease they weren't sure it was acide reflux so they did every test imaginable including an ultrasound. During the ultrasound the guy who did it was saying I had a cluster of cysts. They must've been no big deal because no one did anything about it. I have an appointment with an OBGYN next week. If everything checks out fine there, then I'm probably going to be calling my doctor again. Thank you.
