Wet Ones containing Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Posted , 9 users are following.

I have been following wet ones containing Benzethonium cloride to treat my Blepharitis with the intention of using them. However I have come across warnings that they also contain Methylchlorisothiazolinone (MI) that can cause severe allergic skin reaction leading to dermatitis.

There is also a waring on the on the wet ones saying be carefull not to get it in your eyes yet know one mentions this. Now I am very doubtful about using them.

Please can anyone share more information on this subject.

I think Lyinda79 started this thread about one year ago.  Thanks

I believe there are two types of Wer Ones. In USA at Walmart the container is white and red. I used them by cutting small pieces off and used it AM and PM it helped.bino longer use them because I don't need To but I have them in the house just incase.

But now I'm a year out getting allergy shots and tossed all my old make up for Josie Maran brand. I'm

Also using Restatis for extreme dry eyes.

All of this has worked for me for months.

I feel like it could always come back so I'm

    Always on guard.

    Sorry for typos

I've never tried those, so I couldn't say. Riteaid in the US sells lid wipes. Those seem to work well. I use those am and pm, as well as olive oil + a few drops of tea tree oil. That is helping as well. And occasional erythromyicin on the lid margins.

It seems that Wet Ones are different in the US to the ones we can buy in the  UK. I used the UK ones and had awful results. Made me eyes worse and I ended up in the eye clinics A&E. Have to say though I am allergic to a huge number of things so I shouldn't have been surprised.

ive found L'Oreal miscellar gel ( check it's no alcohol ) works perfectly. Been using it for over 6 months now and no redness in eyes at all.

Hello Eric I have just read your post and Yes it was Lynda and I followed and thank her for  her ideas because  they have worked very well for me. You do not have to wipe in the eye just on the rim.

    good luck in your choice

I want to weigh in on this. I have bacterial blepharitis and used the Wet ones a while ago and had a bad allergic reaction. About a year and a half later on I discovered that my laundry detergent was causing severe dry eye flare ups. My eyes would get comlepletely dried out, the eyelids would get inflamed and the skin would look dry. All this happened in a matter of seconds after I had rubbed washed laundry directly over my eyelids.  I also had uncontrollable itching all over my body while I was sleeping. Guess what? Methylchloroisthaizolinone was the ingredient in the laundry detergent. Along with who knows what. I ditched the detergent and since then have no more flare ups. I also bought new towels. I am going to start sleeping with goggles and see if I get any improvement in my dry eye as I also suffer from dust mite allergy. Allergens compormise the skin barrier which can lead to bacterial infection - blepharitis.

Something to look into if you suffer from dry eye and blepharitis.

Wow that is amazing Mark and it shows how we are all SO different. It also proves we are our own biggest advocates because doctors don't seem to really know how to treat this problem.

I wonder if it's basically an allergic reaction to " something" and that's the big question ...as well as mystery to solving each of our symptoms / reactions to SOMETHING.

      Good post!

I have been using them for almost two years and have had no side effects. They do not actually go into the eye.  They are used on the base of the eyelashes.  My optometrist has been impressed with my results and has shared with others.  I have also shared and everyone has gotten good results with the Wet Ones and no adverse reactions. I would suggest using them and stopping if you start getting a bad reaction. Everyone is different.  Good Luck.

Two years? Lynda supposedly got her blepharitis resolved in 3 months with wet ones. Even though you are not putting it in the eye I am not really sure that applying it for 2 years wouldn't leave you with any side effects later on.

Sorry I did not mean that I have been using them continuously for 2 years.  I used them for several months until my condition was resolved.  Now I keep them on hand in case I have a flare up.  I have had to use them in times that my eyes start bothering me with itching and tearing. Usually a couple of days using them will resolve the issue.

Yesterday I bought Systane Lid Wipes which are supposed to be hypoallergenic.  They are expensive and a box of thirty should last a month if each small sheet is divided.  They also have a warning to not use them if we are allergic to any of the ingrediants! We should wash with warm water and pat dry.  Thoughts are on how to pat dry with what would not be allergenic and should not be used again!

I also use Plephasol lotion on individual q-tips to wipe each lid after washing with Newborn baby shampoo. After all this I use Hylo-forte 0.2% prescribed by my doctor.  This is for intensive lubrication of severe dry eye.

For the third day I still have itching eyes and yesterday evening I started tearing again.

I know or at least think I am on the right track to control this eye problem and now also would like to work on the idea of more humidity.  Yesterday I was out and my eyes felt fine until I was again in a very dry room.

Thanks all and let's get down to the causes of this insidious problem!

I forgot to mention 5 minute warm water eye bath.   Today i tried an ice cold eye bath and still need to check which gives a better result!

Hi eric, i have posted on here before anout the ingredient Benzethonium chloride

This can actually be found in the femine wash vagisil which i now use as a face wash and touch wood i haven't had a flare up for months and months.

ThanksTammy, i'll be willing to try it.  How do you use the Vagisil wash  and do we need to use it on all our face?

I'm now in a discussion with a medical friend in the States and  hope he can help.  I also have a relative who is a retired ophthomologist in the States.  Let's see what he has to say.

There was little differnce between the warm eye bath and the ice cold eye bath.  I'm trying to stay away from dry, hot rooms and that is not good for aching muscles though.

I am still not willing to give the wet ones a try, My GP has put me on Cellufresh Lubricant Eye Drops and I use them one drop in each eye morning and night My Optomitrist suggested I use Thera Tears Sterilid eye cleanser I was my hands thouroughly then shake the bottle and apply foam to index finger, close eye and gently massage the foam into eyelid and lashes, leave in place for 60 seconds during this time you will experience stinging to the eyelids, I assume that this is an indication that its doing its work, then I soak a cotton ball in warm water and rinse to clean. This method is an ongoing process and not a cure.

It reduces the bloodshot eyes and eyelids also the itching.

My GP has just given me a script for an antibiotic ointment Chlorsig 1% to apply to the eyelids for 2-3 days as needed not tried this yet.

Thanks for your personal input and advise I will take it all onboard Elizabeth South Australia
