    Hi Lisa

if you are at all worried. I am not sure you can get the app where you are. But there is an app available called pocket physio. It has videos showing excersizes after hip op. Shows you the right time to do them and how to do them correctly. I showed it to the physio's at my hospital and they were impressed and I have used it and the excersizes shown are no different than what you would be doing any way. The only excersize I would avoid till after week 6 is where you lay on you bed and slide the leg outwards. I was told not to do that one till after my six week check.

    Hi Lisa!

    I'm in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

I am 11 months post op and still have a limp.

They had me up the day after surgery and working out in PT.

The first week at home the had a PT aide come to my home and teach me exercises. After that I went to Physical Therapy twice a week for 6 weeks.

At my 6 week post op the doc said I didn't need to continue with PT that just normal walking as much as possible was ok because the hip will heal itself.

    Good luck to you!

    hi lisa,

warm welcome to our friendly forum where we share our personal experiences and stories -

there are no 'should's in THR recovery as this is such an individual journey -

in addition there are many different approaches as well, sometimes they contradict each other -

4 weeks is early in recovery - I understand that you broke your hip because of a fall ? that can also make a difference - I had OA in both hips and developed a bad posture, walk etc.

of course your hip feels heavy and will be so for a little bit longer - there has been major trauma inflicted , the fall and the surgery -

I was told to use my cane as long as I walked unbalanced -

I am still in the process of walking correctly, perhaps for the first time in my life redface

STand up straight, relax shoulders, push from buttock, lift foot, heel to toe and finish step - tedious and exhausting - but I am getting better at it -

Be gentle with your self and patient - we love to say here: "listen to your body - don't compare yourself to others, it is not a sprint "

come back here anytime when you have a question or concern or just want to rant

    big warm hug

    renee

    Hey Lisa

I am 42 l have had both my hips replaced in the last 3 months. They told me in hospital what physio exercises l should do when l got home basically easy stuff like lift your leg with you knee bent so many times then leg out to the side and then leg behind you straight and just keep doing them every day a few times. They said walking and climbing stairs was also good. I just am 2 weeks post op from my 2nd hip replacement and l have been a few small walks buy still limping and still very sore your body will tell you if you are overdoing it. It does get easier it just takes a while to heal and for the muscle round the hip joint to heal. You are doing ok going walks. I got 2 follow up physio appointment after my 1st one and l have an appointment in 2 weeks for my 2nd hip but all they did was go through a few more exercises to do gave me these big rubber bands to put round your ankles and pull your leg apart as far as you could but other than that the basic exercises was all l was shown to do in hospital.

    Hope this helps

Did you not see a physio while in hospital who showed you these exercises and helped you to walk?

      Hey Lisa

Maybe diffrent places have diffrent ways of dealing with it. I think if you think you are healing and getting better with your walks and living normally then that should be enough unless you feel like you need physio use the app that someone told you about and do some light physio thats on it

      Good luck

I am just over 3 weeks post op and just got back from my second physio visit. She gave me some exercises just moving g my leg out side to side and behind you and in front the first time it was on my operated leg and now to do it on both. She wants me back in 2 weeks and said my crutch can go (only used one since Sunday) I asked if I would be having a stick and she said no you should be fine. Not due to see my consultant untill April 1st so should be walking ok by then, can't quiet see it myself.

I can't believe he said that. Sure, that's what we all want, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. First, it is normal for people to take 8 - 10 weeks, or even longer, to be able to walk without aids and without a limp. Some people, like me, have not been so fortunate due to complications. I am 7 months out and have torn gluteus medius/minimus tendons/muscles, either as a result of the necessary cuts from THR surgery not healing or having them torn post-op (not likely). Either way, they won't heal on their own and I need surgery to repair them.

Find that astonishing. I had a series of 12 exercises to do 3 times a day - some lying down and some standing up. And I did extra PT for about 2 months. I was walking without a crutch at 3 weeks and I'm sure the exercises got me to that point. You don't have to go mad at them - just take them gently.
