What are my chances of getting pregnant with one Fallopian tube and one ovary?

Hi, I'm new to this. I'm 29 yrs old. Last year I found out that I had PCOS. I went to get checked because I didn't have normal periods. They found that my left ovary was covered up by a lot of small cysts and had to remove it. Fallopian tube and ovary. Then they found that my right ovary had a dermiod cyst. So they had to open my right ovary and remove the cyst that was in it and closed it back up. So now my right ovary is a little smaller then a normal one. The doctor said that he doesn't know if I'm able to have kids. He said there's a 50/50 chance. It's so frustrating because I'm the only child and I want to be able to give my parents a grandchild sad. Please help me. I need some advise. I'm always feeling depressed because it kills me to not know if I have a chance or not. My periods still aren't normal but my doctor started me on Metformin 1000mg twice a day. It makes me so sick so I haven't been faithful taking it. But i just started back on it last week and I'm staying faithful to it no matter how sick it makes me.

hi livia, im new to this too, but you & I sound quite similar. ive only posted once before, don't know if you've read it under pcos & panic attacks but I also have a cyst on my right ovary & pcos on my left. already knew i had the right cyst from doing fertility treatment which i asked to be removed a year & a half ago & when they were doing laparoscopy for this, they found a little endo which was removed but didn't remove the cyst, even though she lied to me & said she had after i woke up, found out at my follow up that she hadn't but ever since then i have been tortured with the symptoms of pcos which i found out i had about 6 months ago. i have been reading a lot of forums & information about all this & a lot of people who have taken the metformin have fallen pregnant, they also say that it does cause a lot of sickness but that they stuck with it. some people it happened the first month & some had to take it for as long as a year, a couple say they couldn't handle the sickness it caused & stopped it altogether i have only read about 2 people it didn't work for at all. i am a year older than you, am waiting to see the gynaecologist & perhaps try the metformin also which i am really hoping works but dreading the sickness, my worst nightmare. lot of people have started on a low dose for first month(500mg) to get their system used to it, then went onto 1000mg & said that this helped a lot & sickness wasn't so bad. i know how you feel not knowing if it will happen, it kills me inside too. my husband already has three kids from his previous relationship & i have a big family of brothers & sisters who have no problems having kids. everytime they fall pregnant, it really hurts, im happy for them of course but still feel life is an absolute bitch & so crap sometimes. i also have a friend who had both her fallopian tubes removed when she was 16, shes 34 now & wasn't interested in having kids with the guy she was in her previous relationship with but she's been with someone else for about a year now & has thought about it & was told she can be referred for fertility treatment & would have a good chance of it working.its the ovary that's the important part, as long as you have one that's producing the eggs then the chances are good. so i think you've got a lot of hope, especially if you can stick with this metformin. if that alone dosen;t work, you can ask to be referred to fertility clinic. when i first started, you could get your first three tries free but think they've changed the rules on this now, i think its only your first one that's free then you have to pay after this but im sure there will be ways of working things out financially. ive had two free trys already & they're trying to honour there commitments from the date we first started so i still have one left, they were unsuccessful but didn't know about the pcos at the time, so im still really hopefull. can i ask what your symptoms of the pcos were? & also why the ovary & fallopian tube was removed instead of treating with the metformin first? unlike you, my periods are regular but very heavy & painfull, its the dizziness, sickness, palpations & shortness of breath that i get, also tiredness but not so bad since i started my iron tablets & b12 inj. i know it really gets you down but you really have to stay hopefull & positive until you've tried absolutely everything possible, but as i say, a lot of people say this metformin has been a miracle drug for them & hoping it will be the same for you & me!! i wish you all the luck & fairydust in the world!! message me anytime & ask anything you want, i will try my best to help.xx

Thanks for commenting on my question smile. But the reason they had to remove my left ovary and Fallopian tube was because the cyst took over both. The doctor couldn't even see them anymore. They had so many little cyst. And as far as symptoms of PCOS. I didn't have any. They did blood work and found that that's what I had. This metformin is no fun. It's the worse thing EVER! Anything I eat makes me feel worse and makes me vomit. Ugh rolleyes..But I just keep telling myself that I'm doing it to hopefully have a family in the future. I been so depressed lately. I cry at night and pray for a miracle.

I've been the same many times, im lucky that my husband is really understanding & supportive, always there to keep me looking on the bright side & reassure me that it will happen someday & still have many more things to try. I find its always better when I share I my thoughts with him. he understands my thoughts & hormones more than me sometimes! lol.have you asked about anti sickness pills, they're brilliant! I've had to use them a few times lately but not sure if you can take them with the metformin aswell but I can't see why not as a friend of my who is pregnant was given them for bad sickness, I have been thinking about this a lot as I am dreading the sickness if I do get the metformin, definitely one of the first things I will be asking & worth asking your doctor about. also when I was constantly ill & sick for months after laparoscopy, I found the easiest thing to eat was salad foods, oh & a really good one is ginger! my sister took this through her pregnancys & I tried it not long ago & definitely helps! the ginger biscuits gets something in your tummy at the same time. I really do believe that your chances are still good! have you ever been referred to the fertility clinic or anybody mention it? im assuming your married/in a relationship? sorry if im asking too many personal questions, you can tell me to mind my own business.

Lol, I don't mind the questions. Yes I'm married. And my husband is the same as yours. He's supports me and gives me a shoulder to cry on. He always gives me to positive side of the situation. I like having someone else to talk to about my situation. Sometimes I feel alone so it's nice to talk to some who can relate. I've actually never heard of anti sickness pills. I might just have to ask about that. And no I've never been referred to a fertility clinic. I'm just trying to get my period right first and try the basic things I can do to get pregnant. I'm just hoping it'll work. What do they do at a fertility clinic? Is it like the obgyn?

fertility clinic are expert obgyn but do much more. they can stimulate your ovaries to produce the eggs, mix with husbands sperm & transfer into womb, they can freeze the eggs & sperm or just insert the sperm into you. they can look at the eggs & the sperm & tell you the quantity & quality & much much more. they work out the best treatment for you taking into consideration the problems & conditions you have, ivf, iui etc, they do it all. but your definitely doing it the right way by trying the metformin first & getting your period right ( I think anyway). if the metformin doesn't work & you've tried all other possible medications, then if I were you I would ask to be referred to fertility clinic or you can go private. there are things to consider with the fertility treatment too, you have to do injections & there are possible side effects & risks with it, which would all be explained to you if you went down that road. your cyst can decrease in size aswell & might even go away on its own. my one was around 4cm for years & has now shrunk to 1.3.my mother & sister both had cysts but there's was on the outside of their ovaries which is why they've never had any problems conceiving. they often say these things run in families, has any of yours ever had any problems? your chances are even better though if you haven't even tried fertility treatment yet. also the clearblue fertility monitors are a brilliant piece of kit to tell you if & when your ovulating, a little expensive but well worth the money & definitely ask about the anti sickness pills, in fact, if I were you, i'd be making an appointment tomorrow for your doctor & TELLING them you want them!lol. please keep me informed as to how your getting on with the metformin, im really interested to see how you get on.x

No I don't have anyone else on my family with this problem. Only ME sad. And it sucks...it's just an emotional roller coaster for me.

hi livia, glad to hear your on the slow release & managing to tolerate them. what doseage are you taking? hopefully between this & the provera something will happen!, it just takes time, its all a bit of waiting game really isn't it? which is crap cause we always want it to happen right now! smileyou got to persevere & keep trying, no matter how crappy it gets! but sounds like you have a better chance of staying on the metformin as long as you need to now, so fingers crossed! i'm still waiting for appointment for gynae & have another urine inf! think endometriosis has grown back, great!!sad so not so sure wether to opt for the pill or the metformin, have to wait & see what gynae says i suppose!

Thank you so much. Well Right now I'm taking 500mg once a day. The doctor said for me to give it a couple of days to see how it made me feel. And he said if I felt ok with it that I could start taking 2 a day. So I start tomorrow. So I'll be taking 1000mg a day. Yes it is a waiting game. And that's not fun! Do u have any kids?? Ouch, sorry to hear about ur urine inf. Does that hurt? And when u go to your gyno ask about metformin first. The doctor told me it helps with ovulation. Also keep me updated with yourself please smile

hope your feeling ok with your double dose? will definately ask bout the metformin first when i see the gynae, quite excited about it, especially after reading all the good reviews about it! no, i don't have any kids, been trying for 10+ years, 2 failed tries at ivf & still have eggs & embryos frozen & at least one more free try so still hopefull, but doctor reckons perhaps the treatment brought on the pcos as i developed ovarian hyperstimulation with the second try( one of the risks of the medication you have to take) & mastitis & breast cysts afterwards, then decided to get the cyst in right ovary removed which was reason for laparoscopy & this was the plan decided by the surgeon & ourselfs beforehand. when i woke up afterwards, the first thing we asked her was if it had been removed & she told us yes, only to find out 2 months later that she had lied & the cyst was still there! they had found a little endometriosis just above the bladder that she decided to remove instead, hence the urine infections ever since. needless to say we were very disapointed & angry & i was very ill afterwards with allsorts of infections, kidney, urine, ear, throat, it went on for months! then found out about the pcos in left ovary 6 months ago only just feeling better the last couple of months but still not the same as i used to be, hence why we decided to give ivf treatment a break & look at other options .some people it works straight away with, others have to have quite a few tries before any success. i have 2 brothers & 2 sisters who all have kids so get lots of shots of them at weekends & holidays, so i get to be the best auntie & spoil them insteadsmile. the urine infections can hurt a bit, its like peeing glass & constant heavy pressure on your bladder, low moods aswell but had worse things to put up with! antibiotics work quite quick aswell. will definately keep you informed with whats happening. what doseage of the provera you on?
