What are some ways to distract yourself?

Hi,

My therapist told me my brain is in a state where I am paying too much attention to my body, and getting anxious about it, leading to the physical symptoms. My symptoms are I feel like my breathing is not working - even if I am inhaling, it feels like it's not enough, and I feel smothered/suffocated. I also feel like I am choking/gagging around my throat.

My therapist said when I get these feelings, to distract myself away from my body sensations. She didn't give too many good examples of how to do this (I will ask her next time). Anyone out there have any good distraction techniques that can stop me from paying attention to my breathing?

Hello! Well, I think the most distracting activities are those that require rational thinking or motor coordination. I think painting/drawing is good, playing puzzle-solving games or making origami.

I think quiet activities like meditation are also very good, but these leave more room for you to overthink things.

I hope you find an activity that you enjoy.
