What are the side effects of Laparoscopy??

Hi ladies,

I finally have some news I received today!!

I hope everyone is getting better each day!!

I do indeed need a hysterectomy but I did go today for the Brock blood test to see if I carry the gene for ovarian cancer. Because breast cancer runs in my family, ovarian cancer is most likely to occur as well. If I do carry my ovaries will be taken, if I don't they will be left behind.

I am upset a bit over this. What I did not like to hear is everything is removed through the vagina. I personally do not like the pulling and what damage it could or would do. Will I be able to control my urine when I need to go? Will the muscles not allow me to hold it?

Does anyone have permanent side effects from this procedure?

How long will I be out of work recovering?

Thank you smile

    Hi Debbie

I am 14 days post Abdominal hysterectomy, I asked my surgeon on the day of my op why she wasn't doing it vaginally as I knew she did them, her reply was "I only do it vaginally when you're older in your 60s - 70s as the pulling down to bring out the uterus can cause prolapses later on in life, the cut is harder to recover but as I open you up I can cut around everything and take it out easily with no pulling" that was good enough reason for me as I do know a couple who had it find vaginally and both have had a vaginal prolapse. Perhaps it's also better to do it vaginally in older women as it is not such a hard recovery. Hope this helps and good luck x

      Thank you Nanny it does!!

I was surprised to read the doctor only does that for women in their 60's and 70's. I'm 42 so that is quite interesting. I am not thrilled with the pulling myself either. I will definitely ask about both and see what she tells me.

I just had the blood test today but no doubt she will go over everything with me once the results are back and we know exactly what needs to be done, then I will figure a date for surgery.

I have a plan to cook many dinners and freeze them so my husband can eat good. He can cook but he works too many hours and doesn't have time.

I too will have food for myself. smile

Sorry I went off course there.

Thank you. I will ask a lot of questions plus my husband wants to be there to ask questions and know exactly what will happen.

    Hi Debbie

From my experience of a vaginal op you are very lucky to be having your procedure this way.  I had mine 8 weeks ago and I was very worried beforehand.  My op was 9.00 in the morning and by lunchtime I was sitting up in bed with a sandwich and cup of tea.  I experienced no pain (other than a little soreness on the first night), no discomfort or bleeding.  I spent four days in hospital, which was a day longer than expected but purely because I had a dizzy spell due to low blood pressure.  I spent my 6 weeks convalescence with my partner and it felt more like a holiday as I was able to go for short walks from week one. By week 5 I was jogging in the local park and back to work at 6 weeks.  I can honestly say I didn't even feel like I had had an operation at all.  I would warn you though that the danger of feeling so well means you don't realise that your stitches are still vulnerable to any bending, stretching etc as I found out at 2 weeks post op when I had a bleed, but this stopped after a period of rest.

Don't be worried, you will be fine.

    Best wishes Shani

    Just come across your post.

Can I ask why do you need a hysterectomy?

I can only say that I have prolapse problems and

it is good to keep your womb for as long as possible.

It helps to support your other organs later on.

I would suggest seeing 3 specialists in your area top specialists prior to surgery.

    Best Sandra

Hence a subsequent surgery in 15 years may be necessary,

Consider your options first seek opinion.

i realise many women have had surgery for very good reasons,

    but get 3 opinions prior.

      Hi Sandra,

I have fibroids with pain and discomfort.

I had the Brock blood test done on Saturday. It will take about 4 weeks before I get the results back, she'll then go from there to see if the ovaries stay or go.

You know what Sandra? I didn't think to see another physician because I thought she'd know best.

      Thank you!

      Debbie
