Hi - I understand the pain and frustrations. Life does change abruptly doesn't it?

I dont think you will be cleared to drive for a while although you may always recover faster than majority.

If you are considering a change of car, three thoughts come to mind: avoid bucket seats, high step-ups and look for leg room.

I haven't shopped for a car in 8 years so not a good source for models that suit. We have a Toyota and the bucket seats are really uncomfortable and " no the wretched wedge cushion does not make it better"!

    Good luck 2 paws.

It certanly does,my wife has a back seat and a wedge and some days it drives her mad trying to get it right ,bucket seats, no adjstments ,the mobility guy wanted a stack for a small job, i think they saw me coming,my driving days are a while off yet, the head injury nocked some of the stuffing out of me ,so my wife has more to do,feet have to be lifted in and out of the car, doesent help with the paitent`s dapermant,

Can i just give you a helpful hint i was taught for those struggling to get there feet into the car as i do i can't do one leg at a time as parting my legs cause me great pain so here is a tip. Get a plastic bag like a supermarket shopping bag or a plastic rubbish bag and place them on the car seat, sit down on the seat with the bags and use your hands to help lift your legs a little and swing them in as the plastic is a slipping kind of surface and help you swing and guide your legs into the car. I hope you understand the way i explained it.

I was given a 'slide sheet' by my hospital, but an old plastic carrier bag works just as well.

I also have that straggle and I've leather seats aren't good or deep wedge bucket seats. Cloth seats are better and the common sedan is to low. I have found the small 4wd cars wonderful are there like bottom hight you don't need a step in get into them you just back up your bottom to the seat and sit then swing both legs in together. I'm not sure where you live to recommend what kind of cars to you. I hope this helps you.

Hi, Appreciate your problems, for last 40 years have only driven automatic, if possible with electric drivers seat, and these days there are many more auto vehicles and those that are just a little bit higher, extra handles especially above drivers door and avoid deep footwells. I understand financial restraints as had to give up work at 40, however your mobility is so important. ...best wishes

    Hi 2 Paws,

Warm welcome to this friendly forum -

Were you in an accident that required total hip replacement? or do I read that wrong?

Oh, I wish I could change my car - When living in Los Angeles,I drove an automatic, midsize car - Now I live in Holland and have this tiny toy car with low and narrow seats and stick shift - Challenging for normal people and even more so for double THR people - I  think I prefer a high car over a low one -

I agree with Linda's comments - don't worry about it - at some point you will be back and getting in- and out of your car will be easier -

take it easy for now and let us know how you are getting on otherwise?

    big warm hug

I too have problems getting into my car. I get in backwards. Sit my backside on to the seat then get my good leg in and then lift my new hip leg in. First get the seat as far back as possible, then once in pull chair forward into correct position.

I have Honda Civic. It has a lot of leg room.

Between the aftereffects of tested accident and the sugery, you will have your patience tried sorely. I cannot imagine the accident itself ... wow.

I sure hope things turn around for you and your family.

      Best,
