WHAT CLOTHES TO TAKE IN HOSPITAL

Posted , 14 users are following.

Hi,

You know how vain us females are - what's the best clothes to pack for a replacement hip operation.

Is it nightgown or pj's?

Is it trousers or skirt/dress for daytime?

    Hi Paula

I was told to take nighties but they want you dressed as soon as possible in comfortable loose clothing nothing tight around your op scare, suggestions were jogging/leisure pants and loose tops, or skirts if your not a pant wearer, I was dressed the second day and they have you walking up and down corridors and up and down stairs so best be warm especially in this weather

You won't have time for clothes in the daytime!  You will have a hospital gown on for first day or 2.  You need a nightie and dressing gown.,forget pjs.  When you can't walk to the loo, you don't want the nurses or yourself struggling trying to get pj bottoms off. So the clothes you go into the hospital in are the ones you will be going out in. Hope this helps

Def nightgown.  I had sweatpants to leave hospital as they are very loose, didn't get dressed during the day though, just put my dressing gown on when I was up.

I took pjs. Also jogging bottoms etc to come home with.

I managed well and as my op was done late afternoon I put pjs on next day which they class as day one. That was a Tuesday was home Friday by 3. I am taking pjs for my next one to.

Take what you will feel comfortable with

    Hi Paula,

One useful item would be a knee length bathrobe and non skid slippers. Knee length for safety from tripping on a longer one to wear over the hospital gown when you go to physical therapy.

I plan to wear home one of those midcalf comfortable dresses that never wrinkle next month after my THR revision. But nice baggy soft pants work too. I will also go home in my comfortable shoes that Velcro or are slip ons instead of tying shoe laces.

I actually do not even fool around with under panties for the first 4 weeks.

    Hope this helps!

Far be it for me as man to advise a woman (we are never right !!) on what to wear but stick to tracksuit bottoms.

However, in view of DawnDee's previous comments would a woman surely not wear a cocktail dress ?

Does the USA really call them under panties !!!!

No, the USA calls them underpants or panties.  Panties are frilly, sexy underwear.  Underpants are the comfortable ones that you wear to the hospital!   LOL.

Having gone through the THR I tthought this forum would assist future patients from the trauma of the operation.

Never realised it would become an area of fun, humour and surreal content. My hats off to all for the entertainment which if nothing else must provide other future hip sufferers with positive thoughts

DawnDedee you are a star !!!

I was in hospital gown for first day n night. I took a t shirt nightie (knee length) which I wore the following day. It's much easier for going to the loo etc. I came home in sum joggers. I took all sorts but that's all I wore. It's hard putting bottoms on without help for the first few days

Good luck to you.  Hope you've picked up some hints.  I was supposed to go in yesterday to have my hip replacement replaced.  But my surgeon got sick and my surgery was cancelled.  I have to go through the stress of waiting again once they reschedule the surgery.

Sorry for your let down lynnsfave, it seems like it would be tough to have to psych yourself all over again.

Thanks.  I've been planning this surgery for probably two months.  I didn't realize how stressed I was ... I slept last night from 8 p.m. 11 this morning!  Not looking forward to starting over again.

Ohhh that must be awful.....{mentally} as well as physcally   .....Any idea how long it will be before he is back and are you def. going with that surgeon or is there a chance that someone else would do it?

      Possible cancellation from another patient???

I"ve got a call into his nurse to see how soon I can be rescheduled.  All I can say is he'd better get me and whoever else was scheduled for surgery last Wednesday (surgeons usually do surgery one day a week) in next week and either stay later to do all who are scheduled next week or push them out a week.  That surgeon is the only one I'll go with.  He's replacing or revising what another surgeon in a different orthopedic group screwed up.  My new surgeon uses a different supplier and thus has several more sizes from which to choose.  But we can't take certain vitamins and medications 7-10 days prior to the surgery.  And we have to use a special soap in our shower every day for four days prior to and then the day of the surgery.   I don't want to not be taking certain medications indefinitely.  So I need to know so I can plan appropriately.

Absolutely you need to know In order to plan. Will you have enough special soap left over to use it again?

      Dawn, US

Yes, I got plenty of soap left.  You need to use the soap five times, but there's no way to know how much soap is left.  Turns out the last couple surgeries I've had where I needed the soap, I've got plenty left in each bottle!  One bottle I never used, because I used a previous bottle.  So I'm fine there.

Finally, the call came through.  Supposedly the surgery scheduler had already called everyone.  Yeah right.  Anyhow, surgery on for Wednesday.

      Hi

Well I hope you do get a quick appointment.

      Let us know please

I know what you mean about the soap ...I had to use that as well.

I was OK with my meds ...didnt have to stop any of mine but that will be a right pain.
