What could it be?

For a couple of months, I have been contemplating whether I have diabetes or not.

I have been to the doctors explaining symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches and eating and drinking a lot but I was tested (3 months ago) and everything but vitamin D and iron was ok.

So I started to test myself using an Accu-Check Aviva glucose meter.

N:B My diet usually consists of chicken, beef ( allergic to fish), pork, lamb, pasta, potatoes, cornflakes, branflakes, bread, cheese, milk, fruit and a few treats every now and then. I am a healthy weight and my grandmother had diabetestype 2.

I am active,

I am only 12 years old and I am black Carribean.

These results are also from 4 months ago due to the fact that I have only just started being conscious of my health, especially as of my constant headaches.

I think the answer is in your vitamin D and iron deficiencies, as stated! Vitamin D deficiency is no joke and can cause awful fatigue and weakness. You are at particular risk for vitamin D deficiency due to being of Afro-Caribbean ancestry. Did your doctor give you a high dose D supplement? If so, keep taking it - it can take several months to feel better. If not, go back and query your vitamin D and iron results/treatment.

    All best wishes,

    :-)

Hi Jaybelle, thanks for answering. I have been given the maximum dose of the supplement three separate times and it has only changed slightly. The doctor was not certain as to why there has been no significant change, especially in my symptoms and was supposed to refer me but has not yet. There was also low levels of something called alkaline phosphate(not exactly what this is.) which has also been previously diagnosed by a different doctor with the vitamin d deficiency. However he had not given me any treatment or advice towards it.

      thanks, you too! lol

OK, it sounds as if you might have a long standing vitamin D problem - the alkaline phosphatase test is related to bone metabolism and detecting signs of osteomalacia/rickets. I would suggest you ask an adult family member or friend who can offer moral support and help you to ensure you get the correct treatment and referral if necessary. It might be helpful to ask for another set of bloods to check your current level of vitamin D and go from there. I had to take large amounts of vitamin D for at least seven months to bring my levels up to normal. Believe me, I know how awful you can feel with vitamin D deficiency and osteomalacia/rickets. It's very common, but also very debilitating and GPs don't always realise this.

Take care. Hope you get the treatment you need and feel better soon.

Hi Jaybelle, thanks so much again. According to the doctor who has 'replaced' our previous doctor, I do not need a referral and have to go back to get some bloods also for blood sugar. He says this could be a suspect.

It is very debilitating and gets in the way of school. I am told I tend to go grey  a lot and look like i am going to pass out/vomit.

      Thanks, you too lol

      hey there

have you finished your vit D supplements

I remember myself when my vit D went very low I had all kinds of symptoms and they were very bad

but after i took my vit D supplemets 50000 IU once a week for three months I felt excellent again and I lost weight cos at that time i had loss of apetite but then I got back to normal

something else regarding that you took all your supplemnts in high doses and it's not giving an effect thats because your blood is not absorbing it he should have given you calcium supplements along with the Vit D cos calcium helps absorb vit D and Vit C with the iron cos Vit C helps absorb iron

or in turn you can take your vit D pills with milk and iron with orange juice

      Hi marielle,

yes i finished my supplements overall over 9-10 months but nothing or a tiny bit has changed. Also I can only have the dose suitable for my age, not the adult dose. I had calcium medicine with my vitamin d and also vitamin c medicine. I continue taking those now and have a lot of milk/dairy products and foods with vitamin c.

But I guess my blood is still not absorbing it.
