What could my vertigo be?

I was so happy to find your website, my question is regarding vertigo.

15 months ago out the blue the room spun for around 1 minute, then I was left feeling slightly lightheaded/fuzzy/dizzy but only ever so slightly, this feeling by lunch time turned into a heavy dizzy feeling and I had to take a stemetil tablet given by my doctor, I would wake up the next day feeling this slightly fuzzy/lightheaded feeling and by lunch time the heavy dizzy feeling kicked in and had to take more stemetil, this went on for 7 days and it just went away! I saw ENT specialist, had warm water test in my ears, eye tests and MRI scan which all came back clear! ENT said he thought I had a virus and it was unlikely to return.

15 months on, out the blue two weeks ago, the room started spinning for around 1 mintue, it left me with the same fuzzy/dizzy/ lightheaded feeling only slightly as before. I did notice being active made it worse, this feeling has been consistent for two weeks now. Two days ago I felt worse and it turned into an attack late Wednesday evening, I felt a little sick, couldn't eat and the top at the back of my head was very dizzy but no spinning fortunately it would ease off and get intense again, I had to lay down. This happened for several hours. I woke up feeling a lot better the next day (still had fuzzy/lightheaded feeling though) but today, I feel worse again and feel like I might get another attack, I'm getting strong waves of dizzy at the top at the back of my head for around 2/3 seconds.

I've been doing a lot of research on the internet, I'm really hoping I don't have minieres disease.

I've cut out coffee, chocolate, alcohol and salt.

Please, help this is making me depressed and scared, what do you think it could be?

First thing I'd say is do t be scared. I'm not a Dr so this is just my opinion and what I've experienced personally. Go back to your GP and if the symptoms are really bad there is an injection you can have which helps. My mother suffers with this terribly and the injection really helps.

Thanks for the reply straff!  How often does she have an injection, how effective is it? Has she diagnosed?

Sounds like you fall into the same kind of category most of us are in. I have had my stuff for almost 4 months now. Going for more tests today actually. Doctors really don't seem to know exactly what my issue is so I just deal with it. Neurologist said that eventually it will go away lmao. Gee thanks! Every test is pointing to middle ear yet none of them can tell exactly what is wrong in my middle ear. Well maybe today this will change. Fingers crossed

Hi magnets good luck today let me know how you get on at ENT, have you had vertigo before this time? What systoms do you have? Are you dizzy constantly or does it come and go?

    Hi Jessica

I am no expert in this subject but can report that I've had similar symptoms with labyrinthitis x 5 times in about 10 years.  Some episodes are worse than others and my doctor has recently diagnosed the most recent episode as benign paroxysmal vertigo because I only get it when lying down.  You have my sympathies, but it does sound as if you've had all the right tests done.  Fingers crossed that it doesn't come back again too soon for you.

      Hi Roseann

thanks for the kind message, I saw a practitioner 3 days ago as he was the only one free to see me that day but he was not a qualified doctor, he thought it might be Minieres disease I just hope he's wrong, I need to go back to ENT to really know.

Quite right Jessica.  You need to keep badgering them until you get a proper diagnosis.  A correct diagnosis is such a relief and you feel half way to being cured.  All the best to you.

Ok so I went to get a hearing and eng test today. Good news! I do have labyrinthitus in my left ear. Said that for the 4 months that I have had it is normal. She said that she thinks I am already in the recovery process. Gave me two exercises to be performed twice a day for 4 to 6 weeks. No medicine! Said confidently that it should be gone maybe even before the six weeks. Said to keep exercising because it helps. Hungover feeling everyday is brought on by the fluid in our ears condensing brought on by the virus. My brain has always relied on my hearing and vision to keep balance however my left ear is not functioning like my right so it begins to rely on my eyesight. It needs both sight and hearing to keep balance. Hence why when I drive and come to a stop I feel dizzy. She said that meclizine is only good for real bad dizzyness and vertigo. Hinders the process after the vertigo is gone.

Please see my recent post on the possible connection between bppv/vertigo and Vitamin D defficiency!

Your original post seems to have been deleted Samantha.  I'd be interested to hear this theory about Vit D deficiency.  Thanks.

Sam I haven't checked out ur post about vitamin d however last year I had a vitamin D deficiency. My ENT who I now regard as worthless said that my vitamin d should have nothing to do with it. Now I'm questioning that

I woke up this morning to a dizziness that I have only experienced when I was diagnosed years ago with a bout of Labyrynthitis.  I haven't been sick..so I did some internet searching and diagnosed myself (54) with BPPV ( I didn't think I was having a stroke, I'm other wise pretty healthy).  I found a maneuver you can do yourself at home called the Carol Foster MD half somersault.  I diagnosed it was my left ear, did the maneuver and now NO DIZZINESS!  It literally took less than 1 minute to rid myself of the spinning.

Nancy I didn't have a cold either before I caught labyrinthitus. I still have it but the exercises seem to help a bit but I still have 5 weeks to go

Google carol foster half somersault.  It took about 30 seconds to do. It has to do with repositioning the microscopic crystals in your ear canal.  If you sit on the edge of your bed, and lay to the left and then the right side... Does one side elicit the spins? If so then that's the ear where the crystals need to be repositioned.

It's in my left ear! I had a ENG test and it took almost 2 hours. She has me positioning my head at a 45 degree angle laying on both my left and right sides. 10 each side. Also has me sitting in place and turning my head left and right real fast to a count of 40. 20 left 20 right. Then focus on one spot on the wall for at least ten seconds until my eyes focus and the spin dissipates.
