What did you choose for hip replacement materials? (for females?)

Hi everyone,

I am curious what you chose for your replacement materials?

I don't want metal on metal because of the poisoning. Just curious what people have gotten and how long were they told that option lasts for?

Thanks!

    Hi ruu,

I must be the only one on here who did not know you were allowed to choose your surgeon or hip material. I knew metal on metal was a no no due to publicity. I had a charnley hip, metal post and ceramic ball cemented. I have never had any pain since operation therefore no nasty painkillers.

I didn’t know either and when I went to post op check he still didn’t tell me even though I asked. Said he couldn’t see on the screen!

I got discharge info from the hospital which included the type of hip used plus a lot of other info.

Are you in the UK. If so contact the National joint register

I must admit I thought they were supposed to give you a discharge pack plus anY tablets you needed to take. Where do you live, I am in UK.

Unfortunately, in wales they do not have to disclose anything online maggie.

I was not given a discharge note ptolemy on leaving hospital so knew nothing. I only know I had a charnley hip as I asked at the 6 week check up what hip I had.

You would have had a posterior approach with polyethylene probably in that case. Didn’t they give you any notes on what to do and what not to do? Did they give you any medication to take home?

I know I had the posterior approach by the scar and being aware of the metal on metal problem as it had been in the news, I asked what he would use, which is metal and ceramic. I did not know ceramic was a problem as well, just hope it will be okay as I was very active before and would like to be again.

I was given a piece of paper with some simple exercises on, that was it, you are on your own to work out what to do.

You are right, you really are on your own, I did have the discharge pack but it did not really tell me what I should and should not do when I left hospital.

I think ceramic hips have improved from the early ones which were inclined to crack.

I had a note for my gp saying all had gone well- no details of the replacement . Some exercise sheets and notes about DVT. Medication- paracetamol and oxy something I gave in to my pharmacy and advice re removing clips at 10 days . Other than that nothing .
