What else can it be??? Help!!

About 3 weeks ago I had this sudden burning when I went to the toilet. I automatically assumed it was a UTI because I have had many in the past. I went to the doctors, where the wee sample I had given came back as clear, but they gave me antibiotics anyway because I was displaying symptoms. The antibiotics did nothing, so I went back and did another sample, again, it was clear, but they prescribed other antibiotics, which I took and also did nothing. I went back again where they did a swab of my discharge which was very sore and they took my temperature which was high, so she said that she thinks it's BV. She gave me antibiotics to treat it, but still no result and I'm waiting for the results to come back from the sample. It's really frustrating and distressing to continuously be sore down there and for it to burn every time I wee. No STI's either so you can rule that out. Just need some help! Thanks.

I'm very sorry to hear you are going through this. For years, I suffered with pain during urination, and symptoms that were so like a UTI that I was constantly drinking cranberry juice, and my doctors repeatedly put me on antibiotics - even though my urine cultures were not growing any bacteria! I finally had a new doctor - fresh out of medical school - who came to the practice. She suspected I had Interstitial Cystitis, and sent me to a specialist. She was right. Intersitial Cystitis is a chronic condition (it can come on suddenly) that is characterized by all the same symptoms of a UTI, minus the infection. Antibiotics and cranberry juice only make the condition worse. The inflammation from IC can be related to diet - acidic foods, especially can cause problems. There is a great deal of information on the internet about the kinds of foods to avoid if one is suffering from IC - I recommend trying the diet for awhile to see if you get any relief. The diagnostic test is a surgical procedure, and every five or six years I have a procedure to keep my bladder from getting worse. It sounds like this could be a possible explanation for why you are having UTI symptoms, but no infection. I recommend asking your doctor for a referral to a specialist, and ask them if it is possible Interstitial Cystitis is causing your pain. Good luck to you.

      Thank you for your response!

I probably didn't make my symptoms clear enough. I don't have any urge, or frequency to go. It is not torture to go to the toilet. It's uncomfortable and id rather not have it there (especially as I'm only 16, not something you want there). I've read up on IC and I don't think it's that at all. I've spoken to a lot of people which say sometimes you can get burning urine due to stress or change in hormones. Thank you for your reply though.

I'm so glad you responded so quickly - I hated to think of someone suffering one more day with this, with no hope!  From what you described, it does sound like it could be something other than IC - I encourage you to keep this thought in the back of your mind if no other cause is found. Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis can range from the severe - the urge and frequency you described, with associated pain, to very mild - some occasional bladder pain or burning on urination. Either way, I hope you are able to find some relief soon.
