What has been your absolute worst symptom of (peri)menopause?

Hi All,

There is such a wealth of experience on this forum, I was just wondering which symptoms of (peri)menopause would top the list as the worst of the long list we are suffering.

Ok, I'll start - for me (so far!) it would be depression/anxiety. That's two symptoms but they go together. (A close third would be digestive problems.)

If you could be rid of just one symptom what would it be?

Nausea and dizziness have been haunting me for 3 years. I have no hot flashes or other symptoms that I expected to have. I went to the ER at onset of the nausea (which is comparable to morning sickness) except mine was most severe at night. I could not keep anything down for 2 weeks and just knew it was something major. The MD asked if I was menopausal, I was shocked, no! I was 47 and still pretty regular. They found nothing... the nausea continued and then days later the dizziness started. I realized I was late on my menstral cycle by about a week, that was unusual for me. I remembered what the MD asked and started researching... sure enough my symptoms were in line with peri menopause. I went to my favorite herbal supplement advisor and she started me on Maca Root. It has helped quite a bit. The only time I feel the nausea now is the day before my cycle starts.

I have read more replies and have more to add to my post.

I try not to take prescription or otc medications. I use a ginger tablet called “Ginger Trips” for the nausea and dizziness. With the Maca Root to help balance my hormones, I take an herbal supplement called DIM; it helps to metabolize estrogen. For anxiety, which I have always had an issue with; that’s not a new symptom for me. I take L-theanine daily and in high stress times I take valerian root. Papaya enzymes and probiotics for digestion. Nothing works perfectly but the combination has made it manageable for me.  My question is... does all his nonsense end once I actually go into menopause? No more cycle means, no more torture?

      Hi there Wendyw002u,

It sounds like you and I are on the same path.   Maca, ginger (essential oil for me), l-theanine or straight up gaba, and in my stress time I use passionflower (valerian does weird things to my body), papaya or DGL Licorice and probiotics for digestion.   I noticed you'd mentioned DIM - which I hadn't heard of before now.   Sounds incredibly appealing!! (I did some research!)  Would you mind sharing your brand?   If it's not allowed here, I'll share an email address for use.   I feel like I'm missing one part of the balance and this (from reading) seems to be the ticket!   Thank you in advance!

So hard to choose honestly! Either the anxiety, joint pain, or burning mouth. I'd probably have to settle on burning mouth since the anxiety and joint pain can be treated with medication, but I've found nothing to alleviate the burning mouth.

Most of my symptoms have subsided but if I could choose one, it would be the anxiety.  I'm talking gloom and doom, fear of dying and panic attack anxiety.  Its debilitating and I feel like a prisoner in my own mind.  Afraid to make future plans because my intrusive thoughts at times tell me that I won't be around much longer....smh.

My other symptoms now are migraines, nervousness, internal vibrations, hot flashes, head rush, costochndritis, IBS, sleeplessness.

My symptoms started in January 2018.  Two weeks before my 40th bday.  Had all but maybe 4 of the "35 symptoms of menopause".  Even came up allergic to whole eggs, chicken and beef which I had moderate to severe reactions to.

I'm 39 and my terrible symptoms started last December with sleeplessness, anxiety, depression. Before that, I'd had palpitations on and off for months but never connected it to perimenopause.

Right now the anxiety and depression have somewhat subsided (knock on wood they don't come back), so the worst for me is the sleeplessness. I just cannot fall asleep most nights. It's debilitating. Sometimes I think, has my sleeplessness actually developed into insomnia because I got used to it? It's making me crazy.

I take a ton of supplements to help - probiotics, vit c, a multivitamin, a vitamin b complex, omega 3, 5htp for mood swings. I'm about to start my BHRT progesterone tonight. Praying that it will help me sleep!

    Hey Ladies...

Ruthie, I am full blown post-menopausal or shall I say MENTALpause?!! That being said, my WORST symptoms are:

    1. Mental Issues
    2. Rib Cage Pain
    3. Cold Hands
    4. Cold Feet
    5. Sporadic Sore/Scratchy Throat

There are times when I can't turn my thoughts off and they race! It's gut-wrenching, to say the least! The imbalance hormones wreak havoc on us! Calgon, take me away!!!!

I don't mean to be the bearer of BAD news but... my girlfriend's 75 year-old mom told her & I.. that some of the menopause symptoms last far beyond the age of 75, so much so, we will take them to the grave!

    SMDH, profusely!!

      Hi Toria..

No, I am not on HRT. This menopausal journey is an ALL-NATUREL one, for me! I exercise, eat right, and do all the necessary things to keep me functioning. Having said that, I've heard sooooo.. MANY horror stories about HRT, that have made me decide to take another route. Suffice it to say, I've learned and experienced, MENOPAUSE pushes through everything! Suffice it to say, SOME days are better than others!

I will be 41 in August, and here are my symptoms:

Digestive issues (heartburn, burping, nausea, random loose stools)

ANXIETY which is made worse by all of the strange physical symptoms and makes me think I have some terrible illness

    Heart palpitations

    Headaches (usually around my period)

Shorter cycles (used to be 28 days consistently, now they are anywhere from 22 - 26 days)

My doctor has listened to all of my symptoms and never mentioned perimenopause. I figured it out on google. I am so glad i found this forum! It's nice to know I'm not alone.
