What is a High School responsibility when a student is injured (BROKEN NOSE) in phys-ed class?

When I was in high school gym class my nose was broken when a "soft ball" was thrown to me and hit my face. What is the school's responsibility? Should the school immediately send me to a hospital? Or should the school call the parent to pick me up? From my experience, I think the school lacked poor judgement. I recall I was given an ice pack and told to watch the ball. My mother picked me up from school. She took me to a general practitioner doctor and I recall him say, "such a pity". I have been angered that my parents never went after the school for their liability. Anyhow, it is all in the past. I had to wait several years later when I had health insurance to cover the surgery. Just wonder what the protocol now-a-days would be?
