What is going on :(

So a bit of back story here: I'm 20 years old and generally in good health.

For the past few months I've been suffering from abdominal pain (mostly under right ribcage) irregular bowel habits, Bloating, etc. Finally got a colonoscopy and endoscopy the other day, colon turned up completely fine, endo came back with slight inflammation and hiatus hernia which I was told not to really worry about.

Decided to go out on the weekend as a kind of celebration and things got a bit out of hand, ending up in me drinking a ridiculously large amount of alcohol. I then spent the next TWO days throwing up all food /water I was attempting to have and just feeling completely awful. I had bad abdo pains in the same under the rib spot but it seemed to go through to my back as well. Especially when I touched a certain rib in my back it would cause a pain in my back.

On the second day of the throwing up I decided to go A&E as I was pretty worried I had done some serious damage and Google was shaking me up a bit.  I was given a blood test, not sure what they were even checking for, and urine test which apparently came back fine.

Day three is today and I do feel quite a bit better: not throwing up anymore but still feeling quite nautius and generally under the weather. I noticed that I'm not really getting much of an urge to urinate which is worrying me, headaches on and off and still a slight pain in the same spots. I have drunk a lot of water today and ate decently throughout the day.

Am I just being really paranoid here or could I have done some real damage? I would love to hear that this is just a ridiculous hangover due to the amount I drunk and that the tests at A&E would have shown up anything bad? Some reassurance would be so nice as I can't really go back to the doctor just yet. Thanks a lot in advance!

When you have a hiatal hernia, you are supposed to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tomato products. Drinking alcohol could definitely make you super sick because of it.

Oh and i had an ultrasound previous to the scopes and that came back fine. I have been drinking every weekend since though.

Your fine. Your young, and you drink a lot. It's going to wreck havoc on your stomach from time to time. I'd avoid the alcohol with a hiatal hernia though, you'll be miserable in the future if you don't (I speak from experience!)

You reckon? Thanks for that. It's just that I've never had such a bad hangover after drinking, thats why I'm pretty worried I've caused damage to my liver, kidneys, etc or something. What about the urination urges going? I'm usually going too often now I'm not really having the urge. I'm also getting a lot of pins and needles in my foot which is really strange.

Google has definitely helped to scare me. I've definitely learned from this though, gonna take a long break from drinking.

Though it's nice to have a drink or two, excessively drinking is not good.

My advice we would be doctors visit.

Does anyone know that if my pain is pretty mild, it shouldn't really be a problem? Or does it not work like that?

I drank for a lot of years (pre age 25) it takes a lot to screw up your kidney and liver. But, there are a lot of other things that you can screw up from the natural PH balance, to dehydration (alcohol dehydrates you), to urinary tract infections. It's hard to say what your exact problem is at the moment. Pain like that, I've had for up to 11 days after a lot of drinking (we are talking 1.75 liters of vodka). But, with a hiatal hernia, it takes a lot less to set it off, and the symptoms you are having could definitely be because of that. I've been sober since age 25 (now 33) and nothing would get me to touch a drop of alcohol again. I have GERD, Esophagitis, and a Hiatal Hernia now permanently to remind me how dumb I was when I was younger.

What I would suggest, having travelled a similar life path at a similar age, is actually to have an ultrasound on your gall bladder.

I am no doctor, but in my family we have several things in common - hiatal hernia, IBS, a love of liquor and bad gall bladders. The pain under the right rib cage is a possible symptom as are headaches, particularly headaches around the eye. So, I would want to rule that out.

When we drink, we are also exposed to some of the filthiest places. I cleaned a bar when I was 23 on contract and when the lights are on it is the worst filth you can imagine. So, I think your experience might have been a combination of alcohol, bacteria, and a questionable gall bladder.

Two days for a hangover is quite rare unless a person is particularly intolerant of booze. It would seem you have some tolerance to have gone on such a bender, so the ingestion of bacteria through food or environment probably dumped on an already sketchy situation and made it worse.

I had a general ultrasound prior to this stupid bender, and all came back fine. I remember him saying my gallbladder was fine, no stones or whatnot. Could a bender like this cause damage to an otherwise fine gallbladder?

Day 4 and I'm feeling better than yday, just got the 'mild' naggily pain under my right rib cage every so often. Apart from that, I seem to be fine.

Still having less urge to urinate which is confusing me though.

      Thanks for your great reply.

Well that is also the location of your liver. I don't know what you weigh or how much you drank, but you can indeed cause a lot of damage to the liver with excessive alcohol use. At any rate, it sounds like you are getting better and don't really have an IBS problem that would fit this board.

Couild be an acute case of liver poisoning or pancreatitis which the bloods were looking for. I think an elevated white count points to the pancreas, you could check on-line. In your shoes I would lay off alcohol completely for six weeks and see how it goes. If you poison the liver it can take a  while to recover. If the anpcreas is implicated you really need to avoid alcohol altogether for ever although I know people who persist with drinking and get periodically hospitalised.

Could of course be plain old food poisoin if you ate somethign bad (kebab?).

If the bloods came back fine (stupidly I didn't ask what they were even looking for as I was so out of it) does that mean that it won't be one of those issues? Yeah I'm definitely going to lay off the alcohol for a long while and try and eat as healthily as possible.

Can't really remember what I ate that night unfortunately!

Sounds like alcohol poisoning to me! You MAY have inflamed your pancreas a bit which could be the pain.

Keep drinking lots of water and everything should settle down.

Don't drink south next time and maybe stick to beer!

I'm sure you won't have done any permanent damage. Now have a pint of water!!

    Best wishes 😊

Yeah I'm ensuring to drink as much water as humanely possible! Deffo having a long break from the alcohol.

I thought right hand side under the rib area would be my liver? Do you have any idea how long the pain should last for?

Day 4 and I'm feeling better yet than yesterday but still got this naggily pain every so often. Only symptom I have now. A tiny bit of nausea too I guess.

      Thanks for your help!

No worries. Your liver gallbladder and pancreas are all on the right.

You're only 20 so very doubtful that you will have done any longtime damage to any of those organs unless you have been drinking heavily for years.

Put in down to experience. I agree with other bloggers - unlikely IBS - possibly gastritis which will settle down in time.

      Stop worrying!
