What is the main cause??!

Hi there, I have been told I have ibs as all my test have came back normal, I have done a lot of research and have even tried the fodmap diet which was not a success. I am finding it hard to understand why I am still having diarrhoea if I changed my diet and eliminated anything that could trigger it? Should my symptoms not be reduced from doing this? As I thought ibs happens from certain foods you eat. I have been feeling very ill with it and I keep going back to my GP who keeps saying it's ibs, so does the specialist, just finding it hard to understand because I haven't seen a difference from changing my diet? TIA

Ibs is a functional disorder- the gut doesn't work properly. This is why despite changing food and lifestyle symptoms still flare up. All you can do for diarrhoea is take Imodium and keep hydrated. Make sure you keep eating as undernourishing your body will only make you feel more ill.

FODMAP isn't great for IBS-D. All you can do is avoid irritants and wait for the flare to calm down.

Food doesn't always trigger IBS flare ups.  I have IBS and don't get any food reactions related to my IBS.  Everyone experiences IBS differently.  There are some people who don't respond to any standard Irritable bowel treatments.  Ask your doctor to refer you to an IBS clinic who will be able to spend more time with you.

    Hello,

I have found a series of products that are helping me. It is Heather's Tummy Care. She has a fiber product that has been working wonders for me. I have IBS-C, but it works for IBS-D too.

I also use her teas which help calm the intestinal tract.

I stopped eating wheat and eat homemade spelt bread (bread machine). I stay on the low fodmap diet and have an app on my phone from Monash University. It is more extensive than any list I found.

Google Heather's Tummy Care. She's in Seattle, Wa.

    Hope this helps!

Hi Sorry to hear abour your worry

Can I ask which tests you've had?

Did the ibs start after a stomach bug?

Is it diarrea everyday - do you ever have a regular stool?

I've had 6 months of /soft stools./thin stools Never one solid piece. It's very upsetting - stay strong

    Goodluck

Do you eat enough Whole Grains and eat Brown Rice, sometimes if diets are lacking in roughage this can cause problems with a loose bowel.

When I had IBS it was advised to try and eat a natural diet. In my case I eat around seven portions of fruit and vegetables, they used to say five portions although now this has been increased to seven. We need plenty or roughage, Potatoes, Rice, and Pasta seems to fit the bill. Fish a couple of times a week, one White Fish and on oily fish like Salmon, Herring or Makeral helps. We sometimes have sardines from the tin with Tomato Sauce, they are full of OMEGA Oils, Even our Pax has Sardines and tinned Makeral to suppliment His diet at least one a week.

Green veg are classiefied and included with our fruit allowence Carbohydrates are counted separate and are not included in your fruit allowence.

Keep of convenience foods or foods that have all the good bits taken out

hi no i am not drinking anything cold.  wow good to know that. i used to love having ice cold smoothies. sad damn another thing off the list now.

If your smoothies contain dairy, this may also upset your IBS if you are lactose intolerant.

Cold things will not give you ulcers. Some people are sensitive to hot and cold some aren't. See what works for you.

Prior to semonella I always had natural yoghurt blueberries and ice - with chia seeds - but haven't since

I've heard banana and blueberry smoothie is good and it's on the fodmap

I don't have any lactose or gluten anymore still hasn't really changed anything though

Just wondering if calcium tablets and magnesium tablets are okay to take? I don't have any dairy so missing out on calcium apart from

    A multivitamin I'm taking

    Cheers

Calcium can cause constipation and magnesium can cause diarrhoea, socwatch how much you take. Do you have any milk substitutes? Most are fortified these days.
