I am a 31 year old female. I have asthma, which is controlled. I have been having chest pains (feels like a stabbing pain) on and off. I never know when they are going to happen.last year I woke up coughing and in amense pain. Could even breathe probably. Any way went to drs and treated it as a suspected blood clot and was giving blood thinning tablets. After 24hrs become better. I coughed up a hard grey mass, about 2cm in size, it was like platercine. Anyone any ideas? This was about a month ago. Please help?

Hello! I have had asthma for 15 years and bronchiectasis and pseudamonas for 3 years. I have not had that issue ever. It sounds really frightening. I hope someone on here can offer information. Good luck and be well!

    Amy,

Being that you coughed up a thick mass of mucus makes me think that your pain could be due to mucus plugs in your lungs. I have had them in the past, and is very uncomfortable. Take an over the counter decongestant such as Musinex (the blue/white tablet). Drink lots of liquids to thin the mucus. Make sure you keep taking your meds to help keep the airways open. Also, since the mucus was dark in color, you could have a lung infection.

I have bronchiectasis and COPD. When I get too congested and too much mucus in my lungs and can't get it out, I have had to have a bronchoscopy. Under anesthesia, they put tubes into your lungs and suction out the mucus. I have had numerous ones in the past. But, I'm taking better care of myself since I've retired. And it's been over two years since I've had a hospital stay, er visit or a bronchoscopy.

If you feel that your lungs are clear of mucus and still having pain, see your doctor.

    Stay healthy, Beth

Hi, when you have coughed up plugs in the past were they grey in colour and like a plasticine feel? I've taking photos, wish I could upload it on here. I have made a drs appt but not till the 20.03.17. Thanks for your reply

      Amy,

Yes, they have been dark in color. When I have a feel bad infection, the mucus will be green (really gross).

I will also notice back pain when I have been doing a lot of coughing. LIke I have pulled a muscle. So I do upper body exercises using light weights, or stretching and that helps.

Hopefuly your doctor will be able to clear this up for you, (It must be very fustruating to have to wait 2 weeks to see your doctor). Before we moved to Iowa a year ago, my specialist in Indiana would see me within 24 yrs if I said I was having difficulties. Here, I communicate by way going on-line thru e-mails.

I'm in England uk. Average wait for drs appt are about 3 weeks, if I said it was urgent a dr would have called me back but as I'm not in pain at the moment I will be ok. I called it a mass but not really sure what 2 call it. Normally when you have infection the stuff you cough up I know what you mean. This was about 2cm long and about 5mm width grey in colour and like plasticine when I was pulling it apart, coz I was like 'what the heck is that'. The pains I get are if I inhale deeply but not all the time. Weird.

    Greetings Amy,

How hard was the mass? Was it sticky? If you continue coughing anything up, I think you should definitely have it tested. Ask your doctor about getting a sputum culture. If you suspect you have pneumonia, do every thing you can to get ahead of it. I had hypersensitiviy pneumonitis for six months, which ultimately caused my bronchiectasis. Now I cough up sputum nearly every day. Not fun!

By the way, hypersensitivity pneumonitis can be caused by a variety of things - my parrot caused mine! If I had known sooner I might have prevented my pneumonia & bx.

In any case, I hope you are feeling better!

      Hi Shirley,

It was fairly hard and a little sticky. I haven't had it since. Really strange. I'm generally a well person, just these pains I get every now and then when I don't expect it. I have taken photos of what ever it was I coughed up which I will show the dr when I see her.

      Thank you for replying.
