What is this constant sound of crickets - Tinnitus?

I have been to the clinic twice and been given nasal drops and advised to take an over the counter decongestant.
I did have a week long flu early January which I got over by mid January. Since then I have developed a ringing (sounds like crickets) constant buzz in my ears. Left seems worse than right ear. The clinic doctor said it should go away - likely due to congestion. I was away on vacation (thankfully flights didn’t make this worse than it is) but I did catch a bug - nagging cough and nasal congestion.
Anyone else experience this? Reading online sounds like Tinnitus and that it can be permanent. Had me worried. Clinic doctor had said it would go away but I am going on 4 weeks of this. Albeit cough and congestion are still persistent. Wondering if I should get a referral to ENT specialist.
Any advice would be most welcome.

Really hoping it is a symptom of severe congestion. Never experienced it before though. Saw doctor at clinic this afternoon and she said sometimes a cold or flu can bring on T and it can be temporary or permanent. Was too sympathetic. I may have to see family doctor if it persists.

Hi Sue.An
?My Tinnitus started about 4 hours after having my ears syringed 24-11-2017. i will certainly remember that date. At first it was horrendous. It is less so now but is always worse if I lie down and can become very noisy and debilitating.
?I am due to see a ENT specialist in June. My doctor gave me antibiotic drops to put in my ears because she thought I have a perforated ear drum now. I think mine is getting less or I am learning to ignore it. Whatever happens don't despair apparently one can be taught to ignore the sound if all else fails. BUT DON'T GET YOUR EARS SYRINGED. I understand that my condition is not uncommon after ear syringing. I wish somebody had told me that on 23-11-2017
Regards
G

I listen to Delta Wave music on YouTube for my tinnitus, it does help me. My ENT specialist approved when I told him.
Good luck!

Hi Sue
Yes unfortunately it is a long wait, for me it was about 7/8 months. Hopefully your tinnitus will clear up with your current treatment before you get your appointment.
My ENT specialist couldn't find anything wrong with my ears, audiogram was good. I get other symptoms too such as lightheadedness and headaches. He seems to think mine is caused by cervical spondylosis commonly known as neck osteoarthritis.
I too caught a cold around Christmas followed by a chest infection and my tinnitus is definitely more noticeable since.
The delta wave music sometimes help me sleep.
Hope it all works out well for you
Best wishes
