I suppose you could describe it as a racquet ball game which is a cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is played on a badminton size court, with a tennis type net and large table tennis type racquets with a slow ball. It was originally designed as a child's game, but it has become popular with adults now too. I am sure someone can give a better description than mine!

Hi Ptolemy -- I wrote my response about pickleball before I saw yours.  Very good description.  Do you play much?  I was playing tons but only once or twice in the last year because it just hurt too much.  I hope I can get back to it!

Pickleball is such a fun sport (too bad it has such a stupid name!!!)!  It was invented in the Seattle area in the mid 1980's.  Some people say it is like table tennis on a court.  You use a hard paddle with a similar ball to a whiffle ball.  You'll have to look it up on YouTube.  It has become very popular.  Last year I spent a month in Arizona at a place with 32 pickleball courts.  A place in Florida has 100 courts!  The courts are smaller than tennis courts and I think it's a bit easier for older people to play.  We're starting to get a younger crowd (some of the players in their 20's and 30's are beginning to make money at it) but it is primarily now a retired person game.  Here many of the courts are open during the day when most people work.  But that is changing for sure.  Look it up on YouTube and let me know what you think!

    Hi Chris:

Leslie and Ptolemy have given a good description of Pickleball. I have to agree it's a silly name but a great game. It is a fairly easy game to get into and can be played outside on tennis courts or designated Pickleball courts. Also played inside in gyms and arenas so a great all year sport. Usually played as doubles so lots of fun and socializing too. Fellow Picklers also gave lots of advice as former hipsters.

I am 58 and suffered with OA line other hippies so being able to play Pickleball was a real booster after having to give up so many other sport  activities. Looking forward to getting back into it but will have to wait longer than I hoped, probably not until month 5 or 6 it seems.

Where are you living? It is very popular in the U.S.A. and Canada.

Fun to meet other Picklers here.  Yes, you'll find lots of hippies on the pickleball courts.  Knees too.  But you can still play a good game.

I live in British Columbia, Canada.  Very popular here.

Thanks everyone, I live in the UK, and have never heard of it. We are all Wimbledon mad at the moment over here. Will certainly look up pickleball and see if there's any facilities to do it here.

I'm pretty sure you'll find some pickleball in the UK.   I frequently hear of tournaments in European countries.    I've been watching Wimbledon lots too -- I'm loving how the timing worked with my surgery (I'm 2 weeks post op) so I can sit and watch tennis all day, guilt free!   The weather has sure been frustrating, hasn't it?    I'm Canadian (actually I'm both US and Canadian) and a huge Milos Raonic fan.  He's doing well so far.  Do you have a favourite?

      Hi Leslie:

I am also in B.C. on the Sunshine Coast. Nice to meet another hipster and Pickler. Watching Wimbledon is great too. Like you, I am a huge Milos Raonic fan. There isn't the coverage and support for our tennis pros in the Canadian media that there should be.

All the best in your recovery. Netflix is another great post op recovery tool.

Hey Cathy -- I'm in Victoria.  Is great to meet a BC hipster and Pickler.  When we are recovered and if you travel to Victoria sometime, we'll have to have a game.  I really do hope I can get back to it.  Maybe never to the level I was but just to play recreational will be great.  Lots of wonderful Picklers and I've missed them this year.               I've recorded the Raonic/Sock match and just watching it now.  Fingers are crossed.  You're right that the Canadians have never had the coverage and support they deserved.  That seems to have changed with Milos and Genie.  I hope she continues to do well here.             Yes, I signed up for Netflix in December and have loved it. Funny that I haven't watched it at all since the surgery.  I think it's my attention.  But also there has been lots on the news, lots of tennis, and I've had lots of visitors.  Plus I am attached to my iPad.  I can spend all day reading email, Facebook and now this Forum.  And Candy Crush too!

All the best in your recovery, too.  I forget when you had your surgery.  Mine was June 17.

Thanks!  Yes, it's fun getting to celebrate both!  I went to bed last night right as they were starting the fireworks.  I can see bits of them from my balcony but I was so tired I didn't even try and I was sound asleep before they ended!

      Hi Leslie:

Yes, that would be great to get together and play Pickleball. I was level 3 but likely will have ease in starting at level 2. I had my surgery April 18. I am making progress but lots of pains, slower progress than I hoped.

Likewise, if you come to the Sunshine Coast, I am in Sechelt, so come and visit when we are recovered.

      I was playing at a 3.5.  I'll probably go to a 3.0 at the best.  I'll see.

Was there recently a tournament in Sechelt?  Or was in Gibsons?  Are they really close?  (I should look at a map?). A bunch of friends went to one of those places for a tournament a few weeks ago.

Sorry the recovery is going slower than you hoped.  Maybe it will start speeding up soon...........

Yes, the tournament was the Arena Bowl.  It was played at the Gibsons arena though most of the play for the area is in Sechelt. They are neighbouring cities/towns about 20 minutes apart. Gibsons is the one closest to the ferry-where they filmed The Beachcombers but of course it has a lot more to it than that.

thanks for the good wishes. Hope you are feeling better-not too nauseous-sorry if that was a different days post.

Thanks for that info, Cathy.    And yes the nausea went away.  Not sure what that was about.   But it's gone and all is good.  Night.
