What should I eat with my prednisone?

Posted , 7 users are following.

I take my Pred (currently 4 1/2 mgs) when I wake up during the night, usually around 3:30 to 4:30.  I take it with about 1/2 cup of apple juice. I never have any stomach issues.  Does anyone know if there are issues about just drinking apple juice with Pred?

I know the forum frequently suggests yogurt but I cannot eat any dairy.  And I have also seen that some eat a sandwich but if I took the time to do that I would have even more trouble getting back to sleep!

I take mine early am with a bit of yogurt. So far so good. Tonight is the first time I have had any relief after two weeks.

Glad to hear you are having good results!

we each have to figure out what works best for our bodies. I have experimented with taking my Pred in the evening, setting the alarm for 2:00 am, taking it around 4:00 am when I wake up for a bathroom visit and taking it with breakfast about 8:30.  I found that the earlier I took the pred the less aches I had in the morning but also the earlier times caused higher fatigue. If I take my Pred with breakfast I have more aches but way less fatigue. I assume the earlier Pred times surpress my adrenals but if I wait until breakfast it gives the adrenals time to do their thing (apparently the adrenals peak about 8 am).

So bottom line......we each need to find our happy place wink

As long as you have been above about 8 or 9 for more than a couple of months it is very unlikley that your adrenals will produce any cortisol, irrespective what time you take it. The optimal time tot ake pred to avoid early morning stiffness was found to be 2am when a study was done - and that led to the development of the form of pred called Lodotra in Europe, Rayos in the USA.

      Yes, good point.

I am below 4 mgs and I think I have some adrenal function happening now as I am able to get around a bit better and with - more often - less fatigue.

If you are below 4mg and functioning well then your adrenal glands MUST be functioning enough at least for everyday purposes. Whether they could cope under severe stress is another matter - but that is the case for a year or so even after getting off pred altogether. As time goes on the fatigue should improve steadily if slowly.
