What should my estradiol level be?

Normal levels for estradiol are: 30 to 400 pg/mL for premenopausal women. 0 to 30 pg/mL for postmenopausal women. 10 to 50 pg/mL for men which that partnconfuses me lol .....,..........so mines 16.6 so wondering does that mean I'm postmenopausal now instead of perimenopausal ??? ......plus my obgyn has offered me the progesterone shot to stop my spotting and bleeding all together anyone else taken this and if so how has it affected your body after taking it ??

    Hi Barbara,

it is always helpful to know where in your cycle you were when you had the blood test done. Not always easy if you have an irregular cycle! Hormone levels fluctuate daily so they can be hard to interpret. During a normal cycle estrogen will rise and fall. Have you ever had a FSH blood test done? This done alongside estradiol can give more insight and is normally done on day 3 of your cycle. FSH tends to rise during perimenopause. Here in the Uk blood tests to diagnose perimenopause are usually carried out if a woman is younger than 45. However, I have seen many women report normal hormone levels (at time of testing) but who have many symptoms. Older ladies are usually diagnosed based on changes to the menstrual cycle and other symptoms. Your estradiol level does seem low but menopause is classed as having gone 12 months without a period, prior to that you would be perimenopausal (hormones can fluctuate wildly during this stage). Women can experience lots of horrible symptoms in both stages. Some doctors don't like to give women HRT until they have reached menopause or prescribe antidepressants instead. Both are misguided! I hope this makes sense and is helpful. Also, men do make some estrogen, just as we make testosterone, but at a much lower level than us ladies. Wishing you all the best,

      Hi Barbara,

with a FSH above 20 it could indicate that your ovarian reserves are low so you wont ovulate as much, this is a likely reason as to why you have missed periods. I'm not a medical professional, this is just what I have learnt through reading various information and of course there are other reasons such as PCOS, stress, thyroid issues, to name a few. I'm assuming you have had the blood tests done to find out why you have missed periods. Please correct me if I'm wrong. What has your doctor said or advised or have they just said you are perimenopausal? If you are concerned about your symptoms or low estradiol level I would speak with your doctor again. I see you have been offered the progesterone shot, I don't have any experience with this so can't really offer any advice. Perhaps start a new thread asking about that specifically and hopefully you will get some replies from ladies who have gone down this route. It's so hard knowing what to do for the best isn't it! All the best to you Barbara, take Care.

thanks , well i was told in 2021 i was perimenopause and i have missed periods for 6 months or longer and I've had a number of different symptoms, seems I use to not have any allergies to anything but now I'm allergic to everything it seems , and a number of different symptoms off and on , I've been offered the progesterone shots but I'm iffy because of the side effects that come with it , I've had the cervical ultrasound everything looked good Thank God , all blood work was good it's just the wonderful menopause, I was just wondering about the levels I just recently had done . but ty I appreciate you .

I'm glad everything was OK with your ultrasound. It can certainly be a worrying time. I know progesterone is the calming hormone. Some women seem to do just fine with it, whereas some find they experience PMS symptoms. But this is only what I've read in forums where women are taking HRT. Have you ever considered HRT or been offered it? We have estrogen receptors all over our bodies so it's no wonder we can experience a wide range of symptoms!
