What sort of scan to investigate pins and needles from the shoulder down the arm?

I've had pins and needles from my shoulder, down my right arm for about a year, which has gradually got worse. I've already got arthritis in various joints, including my left shoulder, but this feels different. What sort of scan would the GP send me for to investigate this? I had an ultrasound today on my left shoulder, which showed the arthritis, but the sonographer said that it would be a different scan to diagnose a pins and needles problem and the problem may be in my neck, not my shoulder. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has had the same problem.
