Hi Everyone,

I need advice on my cholesterol level. Here’s my recent blood results.

Total Cholesterol is 243 (< 200mg/dl="" normal).="" hdl="" cholesterol="" is="" 48="" (=""> 40 mg/dL normal).

Triglycerides is 148 (< 150="" mg/dl="" normal).="" ldl="" level="" is="" 165="">< 130="" mg/dl="" normal).="" chol/hdl="" ratio="" is="" 5.1="">< 5.0 normal).

non-hdl cholesterol is 195 (159 mg/dl normal).

so you can see that my total chol, ldl, chol/hdlc ratio & non-hdl chol numbers are a little high. my doctor told me that i need medication, but i’d rather not coz i’ve been eating healthy, workout frequently & not overweight. does any of you think i’m on the danger level? can i just go with natural remedy like apples, fruits & vegetables? 5.0="" normal).="" non-hdl="" cholesterol="" is="" 195="" (159="" mg/dl="" normal).="" so="" you="" can="" see="" that="" my="" total="" chol,="" ldl,="" chol/hdlc="" ratio="" &="" non-hdl="" chol="" numbers="" are="" a="" little="" high.="" my="" doctor="" told="" me="" that="" i="" need="" medication,="" but="" i’d="" rather="" not="" coz="" i’ve="" been="" eating="" healthy,="" workout="" frequently="" &="" not="" overweight.="" does="" any="" of="" you="" think="" i’m="" on="" the="" danger="" level?="" can="" i="" just="" go="" with="" natural="" remedy="" like="" apples,="" fruits="" &="">

non-hdl cholesterol is 195 (159 mg/dl normal).

With those levels I would not worry too much but if you are worried, just a small change in diet would help. My levels were huge! Cholesterol here ahould be about 5 and mine was 15.9!!! My doc said it was highest he had ever seen! My triglycerides which should be between 1.5 and 2 were 28.5!! So i absolutely had to go on meds for it and now they are much better under control, but it scared the life out of me! I was asked if i am a heavy drinker and I actually very rarely drink alcohol and I do not eat a lot of fat either, in fact fatty foods make me quite ill. My main meals are always healthy and my only real naughty is a bar of chocolate most days, so it was a shock, but specialist said it can be a genetic problem. So i am on meds for life, but you would need to see a specialist for proper advice, however with them being only slightly raised I wouldnt worry in the slightest! X

You're not in danger levels, let me assure you that before anything else. However, we are moving towards that point where we need to address this sooner rather than later.

As far as the "normal" ranges, they vary from lab to lab. Some go up to 240 mg/dL on TC, and 160 mg/dL on LDL. However, based on various medical books I have read, and schooling I would advise that you keep these numbers in mind and try to get as close to them as possible in order to ensure best possible outcome.

    TC: less than 200

HDL: at least 40, but really 50 and above

    Triglycerides: Under 100

    LDL: under 100

CHOL/HDL ratio: as clsoe to 3.5 as possible.

You can start on statins if you so choose to but keep in mind their side effects:

    1) They cause increase glucose levels (so if you're Diabetic, keep that in mind)

    2) Reduce libido

    3) Lower testosterone

    4) Lower CoQ10 levels (a substance used by mitochondria in the cells [ especially in your heart cells] to produce ATP [energy]).

    5) Brain fog - has been noted by the FDA

    6) Muscle aches

Regardless of how you choose to go about this, chaing your lifestyle (diet, exercise, sleep, hydration) is going to be your priority. Statins just tell the liver to stop producing cholesterol, but if you're stuffing yourself with junk food, you're still building plaque.

    My suggestion:

Change your diet (vegetables, fruits, whole grains, 30-50 g of fiber, lean protein)

Exercise daily (cardio (Keep HR above 140 for atl east 20 min to see the benefits)

    You can try Panthenine supplement

Supplement with Omega 3s (find something of high quality that's approved by the European standards or Australian standards).

Check your lipids again in 6 months. If they're still above normal, start on statin or you can ask your doctor about taking Red Yeast Rice Extract.

    Hope that helps.

P.S. Take care of any other metabolic syndromes (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, obesity,), which will directly help lower your lipids.
