What was everyone's experience of 2nd day pain after fhr

Posted , 8 users are following.

Day 2 for me was very hard the pain l had was unbeleivable l was in tears most of the day and l had been given every painkiller possible. It got to the stage l was hyperventilating as crying so much begging the nurses to help me.

I got through it and day 3 was much better and l was more comfortable.

Am having my other side done soon and this is the only thing that scares me although l know its worth the pain for the outcome ☺

Oh Lors how very distressing for you!...unbearable pain is terrible and affects your whole being! I'm so glad you got through it.

I too had a similar pain exoerience on day 3 where I was VERY distressed and agitated...the nurse gave me morphine injection which eventually calmed me down.

I guess you just have to remember that the unexpected pain is a temporary ( and most unwelcome) side affect and will lead to a better quality of  life through a marvellous new hip!

    Good luck

I thank my lucky stars that the hospital controlled my pain, although I saw others on the ward with real problems.

1st hip they gave me Morphine, which makes me sick as a dog, vomiting all the time off and on, I did warn them this was going to happen, they thought they knew better, not so smart, especially when the patient knows from previous experience when Morphine has been used, I now refer to it as an allergic reaction, thats makes them sit up and take notice.

2nd hip they were very quick to tell me they would not be using Morphine on me as it delayed my discharge last time, they used Fentanol instead, seemed to work for me.

Sent home on day 3 with Endone, which I only had to use for about a week, then stepped down to Panadol.

So sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I had my hip placement three weeks ago and I had I've had a very good experience.

however my first hip replacement eight years ago I had an experience like yours I was in agony and it was very difficult. Fortunately it was worth it in the end and changed my life for which I was very grateful. Just waiting to recover from this one pain control very good and happy it's all over with. Best of luck with your recovery it will be worth it in the end.

Lots that sounds awful and really you should not have been left in pain like that. Day two can be grim for many, it was manageable just but not enjoyable by any stretch for me. I can understand why you would be worried if you were left in pain.

I found out I was allergic to morphine and had a bad allergic reaction too, so was taken off opioids.

My plan for the next one is to ask for an extended spinal. Mine wore off within hours, but some members have had them for up to 72 hours which is a very good idea. Maybe you could discuss this with your surgeon. I am sure there is a solution to your concerns that they can address. If you are not allergic to morphine, maybe the injections are a solution, they really work.

I think you need a pain relief plan so that you feel confident about this coming operation. You might be pleasantly surprised, if managed properly it be a much better experience for you.

I did get morphine injections, tramadol, co-codamol and oxicon which is also morphine but l still suffered. I think after the morphine injection l felt releif for an hour or so. The nurses did try there best.

Hopefully my next hip will not be as bad as they say it can be a diffrent experience than 1st hip.

I am sure l had a spinal which lasted up to next day. As the night after the op l felt no pain and was so relaxed.

Oh gosh...I am at a loss as to what to suggest. Sometimes I think it is the shock of the first one, possibly next time you will be far more geared up with different expectations....just wondering whether that will make a difference. I do hope so.

Sounds like the hospital staff did everything possible for you. Any chance of having an extended spinal....

It is hard there is no getting away from those first few days, but you did it once and this time will be your very last. I hope others can come up with other suggestions for you.

Did they ice your leg? That can work really well in conjunction with all the other meds.

      Hey Rose

I was not aware you were able to get an extended spinal its something l will ask when l go in if possible as the night of the op l was neither up nor down l had very little pain because of the spinal l take it. I was not given ice either.

Hopefully the 2nd l will be more prepared for or it will be a different experience but either way its worth it in the end ☺

I too had a bad second day. It wasn't as bad as yours, but it is in my mind for my other hip being done. My right hip was nearly 4 months ago now and the left will be done in the next few months.

    Dear Lors,

Wow, that is bad ... Day 2 post-op can be bad ... My surgeon warned me ... the anesthesia is wearing down and also the pain numbing medication he put around the wound - (Not medical terms - I had GA ) - and he was right ; I was given a morphine shot - like when you get a root canal and then WHAM , it hits you - this is much worse of course -

Being prepared the 2nd time around, I just asked for morphine shot befpore it became real bad ....

I am happy to hear you are feeling better -

    big warm hug

    renee

P.S. I am a whimp with very low pain treshold !

      Thanks Renee

I did get a morphine shot and tramadol and co-codamol and a morphine tablet every 4 hrs so they were trying there best to take the pain level down but only right after morphine shot l felt releif for a couple of hours. But after that the pain came back bad as ever. But my consultant told me it would be bad and to hang in there and tom would be better he promised. It was so true and now l have had it done it was worth the effort.

Its not put me of as l am desperate to get right leg done now although l am scared od day 2 l know l will get through it and get my life back.

Hey l always thought l had a high pain treshold but now l am not so sure l think l might be a wimp to.

I remember asking the nurses was this normal and was everyone else crying like a baby. They assured me it was worse for some people.

Interesting ... for some reason the 2nd day post-op of 2nd THR I expected the worse and it was not that bad as I remembered - There was another type of pain I did not expect , but again it was managable   -

One thing they kept telling me was to NOT compare the 2 surgeries ...

Hmmmmm ... one can't help it though

Lors - I too had terrible pain, just as I woke up in recovery area.

The nursing staff jumped on it pretty quickly, I remember voices saying give her 10mg, then again another 10mg.

I remember thinking the bed is rattling, I was aware that I was shivering and shaking along with the pain, I coudn't speak, coudn't even cry out the pain was that intense, I assume the shivering and shaking was me starting to go into shock, so they had no choice to get on top of it quickly.

Some minutes later offered phone and asked if I wanted to ring my husband, as I had been insistent that they rang him before I went into surgery to tell him it was all over and I was OK.

Woudn't wish that sort of pain on anyone, even my worst enemy.

      Hi Lyn

I remember to waking and shivering my teeth were chattering together and l could not stop it. I just started crying and that much that l was hyperventilating l was panicing as l could not cope with the pain. I rember grabbing a nurse's hand and saying help me please take the pain away. It was a terrible experience. But l have to say l need to maybe go through it again to get my life back.

It was the worst pain l jave had in my life l felt like they had been sawing and drilling the inside if my leg. Which they probably had been
