Hello Dan,   sounds as though you have Tinnitus and you've probably damged your ears buy

using cotton buds, as we call them in england.

They saying goes, never put anything smaller than your elbow into yours ears.  That obviously

    mean nothing !!

You're not suffering ETD Eustachian Tube Dysfunction then....where your ears are blocked.

If you don't that is a good thing, as most of us on this Forum do suffer it and it's a miserable

    condition.

thanks anne, i did some research last night , tinnitus seems to definitely be a symptom, the most fitting explanation appeared to be "tympanosclerosis" which is a calcium deposit "the white patch seen in pics"from trauma/damage which im guessing is from 30 years of cotton buds, loud music, loud construction atmosphere, etc. so it seems my ear drum has hardened and hearing aids are likely in my future.

Have you seen this condition before, and does this appear an accurate analysis?

Wouldn't like to predict that Dan.  You really need to get an appointment with an ENT specialist.

I've never heard of this condition, but I'm betting someone on this Forum has.  No more putting cotton buds in your ears, they don't need it.  If they're waxy, get them suctioned like my husband has just had done....his hearing improved so much.  Wax can stick to the eardrum, then obviously one can't hear. If this has happened in your case maybe that's the reason you have tinnitus.  My tinnitus of late has been quit low, so bearable.

      Best of luck Dan

      Anne
