Time will do it for you. Can't even feel mine anymore. It takes time. If your scar is healed and dry, go for it

      Hi Steve,

Is the Bio Oil the most preferred and how effective in minimising the look of scarring is it?

I was advised Pure essential vitamin E capsules- break open and rub gently into dry scar area.. apparantly great for the disappearance of Stretchmarks. Would appreciate hearing thanks. Jen

I have a homeopathic cream especially made for scars that has been awesome with other scarring .Bio- Oil does have a great reputation for stretch marks and other forms of scarring .

Jen, I have no idea. As a guy, I am proud of all my scars and did not use anything. Besides, no one will really see it. Message and time. Some good advice by others

My doctor recommended straight vitamin E oil.

Bio Oil has some questionable ingredients in it such as liquid paraffin, red #17, BHT, and more.

Also did you begin doing scar massage? There are several techniques that actively help break down the hard lumpy scar tissue. That's typically taught by both doctor and your physical therapist.

I am only 10 days PO so not at that point yet. However, both the oil and massage worked great for my previous surgery scars.

Silicon gel is the only product that has scientific evidence that it improves scars. That doesn't mean other things don't work - it means there is no scientific evidence they work. Tests on bio oil say that it has no improvement over not using it.

I've used silicon gel since two weeks and at 12 weeks my scar has nearly gone, and is very flexible. But I think that massage technique can have as much to do with it as anything. The temptation is to massage along the scar. You need to massage across the scar with a firm pressure. Not enough to hurt, but as firm as you can. This breaks up the scar fibres under the surface of the skin, and is important for flexibility.

Hello Kel40!! I didn't start putting anything on till about 5 weeks. I had 2 surgeries on same hip within 3 weeks of each other so had to wait some. I've always used Vitamin E oil. The Bio is, to me, very expensive. I've shopped around looking at different oils to use on scars in particular. I also purchased Scar Fix, they are self adhering silicone sheeting u apply on scar. I used before I went to bed and removed them in the morning. I'm still using them, I'm 6 months out from my surgery. I massage oil at least twice a day. Physical therapy also massages along scar to help from getting scar tissue which is the hard lump you get if not treated properly. The silicone strips help with flatten out scar line. For sensitivity try using a cotton ball and rub along the scar at least 3/4 times a day once you feel better then progress to something rougher like a wash cloth, and so on to help with sensitivity. The oil is basically used to help you massage easier all around the scar and on the scar. Hope this helps. Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery!! 🤗🤗. LD

How do you massage the scar?is it either side of the incision or over the top of it all?

I massage both ways. Along the sides and use my whole palm to massage the top of scar. The first few weeks are tender!! 😖 The cotton ball helps to start desensitizing it. Massage in a circular motion is good over scar. When u feel a lump concentrate on that are to help break up the scar tissue. Apply as much pressure as u are comfortable with. As time goes by you can apply more pressure. Physical therapy will do this too. Good luck 🍀! 🤓

      Hi Linda

I am only 3 weeks after THP and am cutting way back on the painkillers but have finally noticed how hard all around the scar is!

My hip looks more out than the non operated hip and while it's still tender it's healing

Haven't heard about massage before but is it ok to start it now. I want to do it but am afraid it will hurt so how do I know I am doing it right!

This is all so new and this forum has been a true blessing

Thanks to everyone who posts and helps us all

      😘😘😘

It may still be a little too soon. Is it healed? Did you have staples or stitches? Rule of thumb, I think, is what you can tolerate as far as pressure on the scar. Lite pressure is fine until you are able to tolerate more pressure. I think using your whole palm would be good until you feel better. I find warming up your hand is good. I run my hand under not too hot water. Sensitivity will for sure be an issue, using the cotton ball method is good. Rubbing the sensitive areas until it's ok then going to something rougher like a wash cloth and so on until the sensitivity is gone. These are my experiences as I had to have 2 surgeries within 3 weeks of each other due to dislocation! And I have 2 scars to deal with!! Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery!! 🤗🤗🤗. LD

      Hi Linda,

I had stitches but all on the inside except 2.

Just steristripes on the scar now! It's healing so well but will maybe leave for another week or two before I try the massage!

Thanks for your advice and hope you are doing well😊😊😊
