when did you have you first post operation checkup appointment after spine surgery?

Hi everyone, I'm 12 weeks post op after having 6 screws and 2 rods inserted into my spine following a fracture in the L1 vertebrae. I am only having my first post op checkup on 25th May, which is 16 weeks after my surgery and I have not heard anything from my surgeon and do not have any contact details or anything like that. Is this the normal length of time you are supposed to wait after spine surgery, or is this late? When did you have your first check up appointment? How many checkups did you have?

Yikes James that seems like an awfully long time for a first visit.  When I had my surgeries and I had three and my first visit was no later than 2 weeks.  I see you said you have a fracture that may be different.  But I still it is a long time.  Are you wearing a back brace?  I had to wear one every day from the moment I got out of bed till I went back to bed for 3 mos.

Can you not pursue an earlier post op visit, if you feel you need it.

Hope you get some news and are feeling better.  Keep us posted.

Hi, that's what I thought lol! What did you have surgeries for / what sort of surgeries were they? My fracture was quite severe and it was a large chunk out of the vertebrae as well as another break somewhere else in the spine, I've been having very bad hip, leg and back pain since so I went to a&e to get checked yesterday at my local hospital, they took X-rays and the vertebrae is still noticeably broken but healing well and normally apparently. My local hospital doctor was very mad at the other hospital since they have not made me go for a checkup yet, haven't gave over my medical records and didn't give me any precautions or make me aware of the consequences of surgery 🙄. The doctor in my hospital told me I could get the metal out as soon as the bone is fully healed but advised me not to go back to the other hospital as it would be the same thing again which I agree but I'm not sure about letting someone else take it out as I would prefer for the original surgeon to take it out again but I'm not sure, I'll see when it comes to it I suppose haha. I rang my hospital where I got the surgery done yesterday before going to a&e to try and get a sooner date but there are no sooner dates available, they're not very helpful at all haha.

And I forgot to say no I wasn't told to wear a back brace although I probably should have, were you wearing one just to keep your posture straight so the bone forms correctly? Since the surgery I have extremely straight posture so maybe I just didn't need one!

Hi there .....My first surgery 2011 as a few discs were bulging and needed fixing.fused from L2-L5 with cage rods and screws.  Wore brace as soon as I got out of bed. Second surgery 2012 found my bones soft and screws couldn't adhere and my body rejected the hardware.  They took all out except cage and added bone from the bone bank to give some stabilization. Again brace and a bone stimulator to help the fusion and pain. Third surgery 2015  minor Care accident actually fender bender.  Passenger in rear.  Started with boku pain.  Called and saw surgeon.  Now for 3 years there was a small cyst about 1mm.  It ballooned to 8mm and pressure was causing nerve pain.  He drained it, no fun.  As soon as he dirtiness it, it filled again.  So back again.  Crappy luck.  They removed the cyst and fused to S1.  Back has never been the same.  All of that lead up to the stimulator after doing everything short of acupuncture.  Here I am today with a stimulator that is not working yet.  I have had 3 rep visits.  Another on this coming Monday.  If we can't get this lessening the pain, I do not know what I will do to alleviate the pain.  Can I assume you do not live in the U.S.?  I had no trouble getting to see the surgeon immediately.  I went thru 2 stims.  The second one was great.  But the trial stim. Is not what is now in the back.  So we are back to square one to find the magic combo.  That's it in a nutshell.  Well not quite that short.??

Wow, you definitely haven't got the best luck anyway, you've definitely been through a lot with your back. That sounds terrible having to take all of the metal out again, and did your cyst develop as a result of the car accident or as a result of your third surgery? It wouldn't be easy having nearly all of your lumbar spine fused, I can imagine that bending must be a nightmare. When I try to bend I get extremely sharp pain in my right lower back and hip, doctors don't seem to know what that is lol. I've been having acupuncture this past few weeks and it does seem to provide some relief, nothing very noticeable though. You're correct I live in Northern Ireland so I am quite a distance from the US haha, is that where you're from? I had my accident and surgery in Dublin in Ireland which is a different country, and medical care is completely different as Northern Ireland is part of the U.K. which provides free medical care through the NHS, Ireland does not and Dublin is just over 100 miles away from where I live and I don't fancy ever having to drive to it again after what happened the last time naturally, lol! So I will just have to wait until my appointment which is 4 weeks from now 😐

James I thought as you did I am a mess until I red some of the other comments on various discussions on here.  As far as bending, no problem.  Only that one cage and, believe, 2 bone from the bone bank.  Each time I had surgery  and before going nite nite  I asked my Dr. "To whom do I say thank you too for my bone, Adam or Eve."  Talk about a puzzled look.  He would whisper in my ear just before lights out my answer.  So I am grateful to the persons who have allowed to move.  The problem is, my spine is really not stable. You know your spine becomes a domino effect.  You wind up with more bulging discs come into play.

I can walk,  although with pain.  Not bedridden.  So maybe I should just suck it up.  NO WAY.  LOL. Your use of language and sentence structure gave you away. Haha.  Beautiful country you live in.

      Stay healthy and heal better.
