WHen does dermovate work?

Hi, was just diagnosed and started on dermovate 3 weeks ago but I'm still getting flare ups. I'm using it once every night for 4 weeks then will start every other day etc. My gp diagnosed me after examining me but I've not had a biopsy or anything done. Should the dermovate be working by now? I'm getting worried As everyone else seems to get relief from it but using it daily isn't helping

I think you could probably be using it twice a day for a couple of weeks until you improve then go back to once a day. You could double check with your GP. You don't need a biopsy if the doctor recognises the systems and appearance. You do need to be patient and stick with the treatment it does take time. You'll get there eventually. Good luck. Ann

Hi, I did have a biopsy either..diagnosed by chance by a rectal consultant I was seeing for a Fissure. My gp agreed. I was given Dermovate twice a day for two weeks then once a day for two weeks which stopped the itching and soreness. I'm now on Betnovate, which isn t as strong as Dermovate, for once a day for two weeks and once every other day for two weeks. I'm in my last week of every other day and all is ok..no soreness or itching still. I go back to my gp next week. Hope this helps xx

When I have a bad flare up my doctor has told me it's okay to use twice a day for no more than two weeks, and that gets it under control. I would try that and then cut back to once a day until your doctor has decided that it's enough under control to cut back to less. Normally I only use it three times a week, but a flare up is a different story.
I haven't personally found that diet plays a big part in my flare ups, but other people have and it's certainly worth a try. I would also try the sodium bicarbonate baths and make sure you're not wearing underpants to bed. I find that the more stuff I put down there, the more likely I am to flare up, so I try to keep it simple.

Thank you for all the replies. I am definitely going to see my doctor about using it twice a day short term and hope that helps. How do you all cope with sex? When you're not having a flare and you have sex does it cause it to flare up? I'm only 34 and we had a very active sex life up until now

Mandy, I've had LS for about 11 years. My sex life is more restricted by having kids in the house and trying to find a good time to do it than it is by LS. I wouldn't say sex causes a flare-up, but you may be more likely to have some discomfort for a day or two afterwards than if you didn't have LS. Will you be able to do it daily? No, probably not, you'll need time to let the inflammation go down afterwards. But a couple of times a week isn't out of the question for me. Foreplay is very important, as is being properly lubricated. I can only use pure emu oil or Astroglide for lubrication (the emu oil is less likely to irritate me than the Astroglide). I'm not going to lie--sometimes I just bite the bullet and do it for the sake of my marriage even when I know I'll have to deal with irritation for the rest of the day. You can take some acetaminophen or ibuprofen beforehand and that will help to reduce pain and inflammation.
