When have been people been able to exercise after ORIF surgery (and what activities)?

I have a trip planned 9 weeks after my ORIF surgery. I understand I probably wont be able to do much (if at all) at that point, but I hate being this sedentary and was wondering when people start exercising again (biking, hiking, running)? How did it feel at first?

It all depends on several things:

    • Type and complexity of fracture
    • Whether you will be non weight bearing or partial weight bearing after the ORIF surgery
    • Whether you will be having a cast or a walking boot

If your injury is not complex, then you may be cleared for non-impact exercises (stationary bike, swimming). Otherwise, you will need a solid 12 weeks after surgery to gradually return to normal life again.

Five months ago, I had a trimalleolar fracture and underwent ORIF surgery with a plate and 9 screws. It took me 12 weeks to start walking (with a significant limp), 16 weeks to walk with a minimal limp and 5 months to start a 2 min running sequence within my PT sessions.

Your doctor should be able to answer your question more accurately.
