when to come out of the walker boot after bunion and hammer toe surgery

Posted , 5 users are following.

I had my bunion and hammer toe surgery 3 weeks ago this Friday. Last week my surgeon said I should be coming out of the walker boot in about two weeks. That will be a week tomorrow. Does anyone have any input about this as it still gets swollen when I have to go out with the boot and walk. Also anyone got any ideas on footwear. Some people on here recommended velcro sandals by Teva. What about trainers? A size or two bigger than one's normal size?. Also what is a good cream to use on foot and any ideas on how to bathe it other than going in the shower? I have to say I am finding all this a nightmare

Hi john. The shies you mentioned would be good but make sure you are able to wear these shoes at that stage. I had velcro heel wedge shoes fir 6 weeks and was only allowed to remove them once xrays had been done. I know that all ops and surgeons are different though. Also I got Dermal 500 from the doc for washing my foot in. It's a great moisturiser too. Good luck.

Hi John. My surgeon insisted on wearing trainers as  more supportive to the foot and help you walk correctly. I would be nervous even at 17 weeks to wear sandals in case I dropped something or someone stood on my foot! My trainers are half a size bigger. I had 3 pairs lined up ready forn when my bandage came off and sent the rest back. Worth looking at Schuh, they have a 365 day returns policyI Amazon have a n easy returns policy on most of theirs too. I  use Body Shop Peppermint Cooling foot cream, moisturising plus it's lovely if youre feet are tired and also E45.  Wishing you well John.

Hi Bee how soon after your operation did you get out of the walker boot and in to the trainers?

Hi John, hope you're feeling good today and it's not quite so daunting. It really does get better, honestly!  I had a velcro shoe, not a walker boot,  I was meant to be walking in trainers after 4 weeks in bandages  but my scar wasn't quite healed so it was after 5 weeks total in bandages. Hope you've sorted your shoe nightmare ? Have a lovely rest today.

Hi John. Once I was rid of my heel weightbearing shoe I wore Teva sandals as my feet would not fit into anything else and they were very comfortable and stable with soft, wide straps. My sandals were leather and from the Casual range though I think the Active range is better still as they seem to have arch support which mine don't. I just covered my sock with a polythene bag before putting the sandal on if it rained. After about week 8, I was able to wear my normal trainers but without the insole on the bad foot. I found that all shoes had an area just at the bottom end of the laces where there was no adjustment and the shoe was too small for my foot. Luckily, the boots I have to wear for work were too big for me anyway so they fitted my bad foot straightaway. Now, at week 14 (I think) most of my footwear fits again. I wear what is comfortable, i.e. trainers, sandals or my work boots. I prefer to adapt what I already have rather than spend money on new footwear that will be too big after a few weeks and too big to begin with for my good foot. I did buy a new pair of trainers though to take my new and bulky orthotics! Don't worry, the nightmare gets better. Just try and enjoy your new full-time employment of caring for your own foot!
