When to stop stool softener after hemorrhoidectomy?

Hey guys...I have a question for all those who have had a hemorrhoidectomy. When did you stop using stool softener? I am 3.5 weeks post op and I'm considering stopping the stool softener since it seems to be worsening the leakage. I didn't use it yesterday or today and the leakage has improved. But my stools have definitely been harder and is causing more pain/bleeding during BM. Should I stop the stool softener and just focus on more fiber and water? Thanks.

I was told to stop using softeners and laxitives as they constantly make you want to 'go' and to start using Fybogel. This is a fibre substitute, helps you to do what its needed but isn't as intrusive as the others.

I am 7 weeks and still using stool softners. My colorectal surgeon said not to rush coming of it. I use Movicol, and the body doesnt depend on this stool softner. All it does is collect the water inside the body to help a bowel movement be soft and come out easily. My GP also said the same thing. Therefore I would carry on using it for at least another 2-3 weeks as there is no harm in it. The last thing you want to be is constipated (I was on two occasions and its terrible).

i stopped stool softeners about 10 days after but kept up with fiber supplements (i.e. Citrucel and fiber gummies) for two months. i still use Fiber Gummies daily, and i am over 4 months post op

I'm still on them at 2 months post op because I still have pain with some bowel movements. Going to try to switch over to a fiber supplement though soon like metimucil

Thanks for the responses guys. I will try going without softeners for a few more days and if it I get too constipated I'll go back on it. Good to know it's okay to use them long term.
