When will I be able to walk normally??

Hi all fellow hipsters!

6 weeks post left thr - not been an easy road. Movement is getting so much better now - I can even squat down - ( haven't got strength to pull myself up yet tho) I can climb the stairs normally too. I am walking with just one stick at the minute but every time i try to walk without my stick I just waddle like a penguin! I know I limped before my surgey but didn't waddle. It doesn't hurt to walk - my leg just doesn't feel strong. I practice standing on one leg to help strengthen it - can do it for few seconds but that's it - can't even put my pants on without holding on to something . How long did it take for you guys to stop waddling like a penguin when you walked without a stick ? I'm getting so frustrated - I know it's still early days - I had uncemented ceramic with lateral approch. I want to go back to work ( im a nurse) but know I can't until I stop waddling! Beginning to think I will always walk like a fat penguin 😞😞

    Hi Gilly,

    You must be very close!

I worked with a PT at this stage and her advice was to ' butt clench' and concentrate on walking heel to toe. I spent many hours using a walker doing this as it kept me even keeled and helped me focus on these two directives.

The other expression used was to 'walk tall'.

This started happening at about 10 weeks but to be honest my second hip (surgery too be late summer) has been slowing me down).

And I need to concentrate hard to really do it well - esp if tired.

Keep at it - you must be on the brink.

    Hugs,

    Hi Gilly,

I'm about 14 weeks post op now, and I think I started walking without a limp at about 9/10 weeks.  Don't be tempted to walk without your stick until you can walk without limping.  Walk slowly, make your steps even with each leg, stand tall and walk heel-toe.  It will come, we've all been through the waddling stage.

    Good luck cheesygrin

    Hi Gilly,

Whoa, you  already squat ?????   I was too scared to do that for a long time ... seems that you are doing great ... I agree with pervious posts, use stick until you don't waddle anymore - it is normal for your body to revert to pre-op walking and also quite possible that your leg is still too weak to keep body in balance ...

I mean, seriously, it is major surgery with rough manhandling and manipulation - muscles and tendons cut , hip forcefully dislocated, removed -

it is just about to get stronger and still fragile - be gentle with yourself - take one step at a time and take your time ...

when are you expected bact at work???

    big warm hug

From my reading, it appears that most people can walk unaided without a limp between 10 and 12 weeks. Six weeks is still so early. Do you have a follow-up appointment coming up? This is always a good thing to discuss with your surgeon.

    Hi Gilly.

    We are similar.

    Left ceramic uncemented lateral posterior.

I saw surgeon yesterday...8weeks post op.

Hes please but said continue one crutch outdoors till 12week or till feel ready to stop.

Not to use indoors...havent done for 2wk now but feel i waddle esp just setting off.

Forgot today and squatted to reach into a cupboard but gave me a scare as my knee on op leg felt it was gonna pop! I still have swelling tho minimal so guess it was this...swells as day goes on.

He said i can go back to wrk at 12wks if feel up to it but on phased return and to start driving now.

I too am a nurse (anticoag ) so he suggested telling them i have not to be in/out car/chairs too much.

He reassured me that tho doing well healing is still early days....to see him again in 3mths.

I too am 6 weeks out! I had some pain management issues in the hospital, so physical therapy was not an option. I had to go to inpatient rehab right from there and do physical therapy.

I came home from rehab with a walker & 2 days later started walking with a cane.

Started going to physical therapy while at home & the 2nd week in...my incision split open!

I had a set back, my surgeon had me do a wet/dry wound packing 2x daily until my next appointment.

Well, that appointment was yesterday & my wound is still not healing, so I have to get a wound vac!

I am not diabetic, but I do have hyperthyroidism, which I have read can cause slow wound healing.

Since I cannot do physical therapy, I have also been doing the "waddle" walk when I don't use my cane! I try not to do to much because I have to heal. I still use my cane!

My goodness, sleeping since I got home has been about 4 hours at night sleeping on my back & with pillows between my legs sleeping on my other side.

And I am no longer on narcotics, I take ibuprofen.

I am hoping that this to shall pass!
