Where did you get your Esmya from?

I am hoping to try Esmya (not necessarily with a view to having a myomectomy as I am undecided) but mainly to shrink them for symptom reduction and to have a safer pregnancy when I start trying. My borough in London doesn't offer this on the NHS and I can find many private docs who do. Which areas if the country were you prescribed Esmya on the NHS? And does anyone know any private docs that do this?

Thanks

Hi Nina, I have been prescribed Esmya 2 separate occasions via NHS in Manchester, so sorry to hear they wont do it in London.

The first time I had them for 9 months(at the time the licence was only valid for taking them for 3 months, but I understand this has been extended now)

After the first 6 weeks, my fibroid reduced by 30%, and over the 9 month period, the thickness of my uterus improved greatly, ready for Myomectomy.

They do receommend it up here, prior to surgery.

You can still get pregnant with myomectomy.

I've been through the myomectomy and it sounds really scary but its not that bad. I had complications during the surgery so for me it was not a success but even so I feel I needed to go through it as if I did not try I would not know if it would work out or not. Do not be afraid of the surgery and recovery , the body is amazing with it comes to healing. I will pm you

Hi Nina, I am in London and got mine twice on the NHS, so I am guessing its down to the NHS trust. I had it prescribed by my gp following instruction from the hospital specialist. I had Esyma once before myomectomy and once after, as the surgery was unsucessful. If you want to message me privatly please do, by clicking on the envelope.

    Hi there,

Was this a hospital Gynae consultant who you requested this from? I think it needs to initially be from them rather than a GP.   I am outside of London still in the south east of england. The licencing applies in the UK so that shouldn't have a bearing. If you are having difficulty take some information from the internet proving it is licensed for intermittent use of fibroids.  The information is finding its way through to hospitals and only in the last few months, some may be more behind than others. Just keep trying gynaecologists, you must be able to get it even if privately especially if you are going to pay, but don't pay if you don't have to as it costs about £400 for a 3 month course I believe. Good luck.

Once the gynae consultant has approved it, then the GPs can issue follow up prescriptions as per their recommendations though.

I’m in Cheltenham and can get Esmya from GP.

But after the ultrasound this week following the three-month Esmya, my consultant wanted to switch to Zoladex injectionsDisappointingly, Esmya didn’t work for me, sorry, girls, for not having  good news to share.

I was on esmya for 5 weeks- I still had bleeding, so much I ended up collapsed in assessment centre and had to be admitted (for the 3rd time since discovering I had a 10cm fibroid) for blood loss. Initially I was put on the pill, then norethisterone and tranexamic acid, then Esyma as recommended by consultant, as it didn't have the side effects of Zoladex, but after the collapse, I was put back on it while waiting for surgery. Esmya just made me really depressed. I had horrific mood swings the week after starting it. I've no more bleeding since my last period after starting Zoladex, which makes up for the hot flushes! They can put you on HRT to stop the side effects too! Booked in for open myomectomy on 10th Dec in Scotland.

Poor thing, so sorry to hear this; Esmya didn't work for me either. I'll be taking the first zoladex injection on Monday, and I'm dreading this hot flushes malarkey!

They are not too bad. I got my 2nd one at the beginning of Jan. Doc at hospital said if the side effects got severe, my GP can prescribe a HRT called Livial (I think). Hot flushes getting more severe now, along with heart palpitations along with general fatigue and anxiousness. Going to go see my GP. Getting a myo 10th Feb**

Hi Claire. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have a 7cm submucosal/subserosal fibroid and 2 admissions to A&E over Xmas with severe blood loss. Been a fairly traumatic time. I'm on norethisterone and tran acid, plus just had mirena refitted by skilled consultant (has fallen out twice). He's concerned that I may have a withdrawal bleed when I come off the norethisterone and is therefore going to do a 3 week gradual wean, the mirena is to help with the wean! Did you come off the norethisterone suddenly or gradually and how many days or weeks into your ESMYA did you have the bleed? Hope you don't mind me asking these questions. I'm just extremely anxious about haemorrhaging again.

      Thanks.
