Wow, that's a lot of money. Even private treatment in the UK "only" costs about 10-12 thousand pounds. I hope you find some way of getting this done. It's made a huge difference to my quality of life.

Hi Paul, this time last year I was also looking at prices for a hip replacement rather than wait a year for our free National Health Service. Here in the UK I found that reputable private hospitals were quoting about £12,000 for the operation -thats about half of the price you gave. I then found that good hospitals in France were giving prices of £5,000 but of course you would have to add air fares and accommodation. There are other places around the world who will offer a lower price but you might not be certain of their quality - and the further you get from home there are more problems if things go wrong. Fortunately just the day before I was going to sign the contract to get my hip replaced privately the NHS phoned me with an offer I could not refuse.

Hi John, where are you in the Uk? 12 months seems a long time even by nhs standards, unless of course, like poor Billy, you are in Scotland. I think Billy has now given up on nhs Scotland, which is sad for the political hoop jumping he did to get seen in the first place

No, I'm in the countryside to the north of London. It was my doctor who said it might be a year however after making a lot of fuss it was only four months - and that I think was because of a last minute cancellation just five days before christmas. Just to put things into perspective last week I was told that my appointment on an unrelated but urgent problem, that appointments are full until next June - thats eight months just to see the consultant. Looks as if I will need to start another round of enquiries to private hospitals.

Thankfully I am English and lucky enough to be eligible for NHS after paying in for my working life because not only is the NHS brilliant most of the time but I'm not in a position to be able to pay privately for my hip replacement surgery
What ever you choose make sure it's an excellent surgeon in a reputable hospital.
What ever happens you don't want to be having a second op to put right the first one

Paul, you will find that the majority of people on this discussion group are from the UK. Did you discuss your options with the doctor? I'm in the US, but I have Medicare and Tricare so everything was covered for both my hip replacement surgeries. I think it is shocking that there are folks like you who cannot get the necessary medical treatment without going into debt. Surely there are other paths you can try to get your surgery done? We all need to vote in politicians who are ready, willing and able to get health care for everyone.

Hi Paul.I just had that done in Naples Fl by an excellent guy who has done 1900 anterior hip replacements with minimal complications. They quoted an all in price of 20,000$ and the whole thing was beyond excellent. His name us Dr Zehr.
The neighborhood is beautiful and dead flat! Ideal for post op walking.

I live in the south of England, and my first hip was done privately nearly 15 years ago. This was covered by my occuppational BUPA scheme. I have since retired! This time I was in a lot of pain, and recurrent UTIs meant that my NHS surgeon wouldn't do the op until I was clear, so I investigated all the private options, throughout the UK! I decided that The Nuffield's package was my best option, including all after care, and any follow up if there were complications, for around £12,000. With my recent medical problems I decided this guaranteed follow-up was important. However, in the end, the NHS offered me and appointment, and I had my new hip 2 weeks ago. I'm wondering if The Nuffield, which has some sort of 'non-profit' status, has outlets in the USA? Either way, I do feel ensuring proper follow-up, including X Rays, physio, blood tests, drugs, etc. is something you should consider. Good luck.

i dont know if it would be any cheaper. Having some type of insurance will help you tremendously, or see if you can put money down and then pay off the balance
