Hi Ccariello,
My P.T. said to use it on the good leg side..It was very awkward for me. In fact, I felt better off without using it at all. I felt like it was making me off balance. Maybe It's because I'm so right-handed and trying to hold it in my left hand was nearly impossible.

I'm sorry. I thought I was saying what the rest of you were. Use the cane on the opposite side of the new hip. I'm really sorry if I messed up.

You should hold the cane on the opposite side of newly operated hip. So this would be your right hand. Good luck though. I found the cane more of a bother than a help. I quit using it 2 days later and just walked upright which seemed to work very well for me.
