Which surgeon for Hip Replace ?

Posted , 10 users are following.

I have difficulty walking.I am 78 years of age and following Xray have been told it is Osteoarthritis. My doctor stated that the condition is not life threatening so no need to do anything unless there is severe pain.

However the condition is getting much worse and impinges on my life and walking is painful and exhausting.

Have now asked for a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon, but am anxious to make a good choice, both of hospital and consultant.

I would like to ask people who have experience to offer advice naming both the hospital and the surgeon.

I am very frightened and some of the comments I have read make me really cautious. Would welcome any help you can offer!cry

Thanks Martin.I do not have Insurance but if unable to get my choice with nhs I may consider private.Trouble is difficulty in finding out costs for private op. and also follow on treatment which is essential too.

I have Bupa cover and went to a private hospital..I believe the op plus all the follow up and physio cost around £10K

      Hi Martin

Could you tell me the name of Hospital/Consultant and location where you had your procedure?

You appear to have had a very good experience. I am keen to find the best consultant.

So glad you are doing wel! That is good to hear.

Hallo Gloriajoy. There is a thread on this site about various surgeons and their merits. However sometimes your GP will be able to tell you who they would go to in your local catchment area and if you have an orthopaedic hospital or one with a big orthopaedic department near you, you can find out about their surgeons on the National Bone and Joint Registry site. They rate all orthopods in the Uk. You need someone who does these ops on a daily basis, who has done more than 500 at least and who is experienced in doing your particular type of surgery. You also won't want to do a long journey when they kick you out of hospital after a few days! It is absolutely exhausting travelling after such a big op and very uncomfortable to sit for any length of time in a car for a few weeks so that should be a consideration for having the operation close to home. It is major surgery but after the initial discomfort of the operation itself, the pain you have previously is gone and most people recover really, really well with no problems so don't go into this worrying about it. 96% of those who have their hips done in this very successful procedure are fine. Best of luck!

Thank you for the encouragement! I have checked out the NJR and looked up nhs choices. The problem is that I have been told that  the hospital I chose is tertiary and only available for complex cases referred by other hospitals. The hospital is Stanmore RNOH which is not too far away, but I have been told to choose within my region of Beds Herts and Bucks. However I am not happy with this.Have done lots of research including fitness guidance and am trying to be as well prepared as possible. But feel that my local advisers are not helping me.I am not willing to be rushed to make a bad choice. This site is the most encouraging thing I have come across so far. Many thanksconfusedfrom Joy..

      Hi Gloria.

Martin has correctly said you can choose any hospital in the NHS England.

However I'm fairly certain you cannot choose your surgeon..which is the main advantage of paying privately, where you obviously do get to choose your surgeon.

I don't have private insurance,so had mine done within the NHS at Wrightington hospital,Wigan.who I can thoroughly recommend..all the surgeons on their books are extremely competent I believe.

Lastly if your degenerated hip means you have no quality of life I'd say you really have nothing to lose by having it replaced.

Gloria, if you are NHS you can use the choose & book system, be firm with your GP. You can choose who you want to do it & where you want it done, even in a private hospital! That's exactly what I did. I'm currently 7 weeks post op & I'm doing really well, so they tell me!

Gloria, I think 76 is young. It's the new 60. My mother is 78 and walking her dog and cultivating an allotment. My mother in law is 100 next month! You're only a kid with years of living to do without pain. My mother in law had a hip replacement 25 years ago, so there you go!
