White flickering light after laser for retinal tear

I posted on here a few weeks ago about a black/gray spot I kept seeing after the retinal tear laser surgery. I saw on the doctor's notes it was the photocoagulation. I also saw that I have lattice degeneration which I'm assuming contributed to the tear. I am not seeing the black spot so much anymore, unless I blink or change rooms with different lightings, but now in its place I am constantly seeing a flashing light that looks white especially in dim lighting. It extends to the side of my eye as well, which I'm assuming is from where the laser was also done. I went to the retinal specialist and said everything looked fine and this could be a side effect of the laser and it generally goes away within a couple months. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with the laser and if it went away? this has been very disorienting for me and I have been fearing losing my peripheral vision. I'm not sure if I am actually losing peripheral vision or if it just feels that way since I have this constant flickering now on the side. I know it's better to be safe than sorry, but a part of me wishes I never did this laser bc its been causing so many issues for me and supposedly the tear had scar tissue from healing itself. If anyone has had any experience with this and would like to share I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

It's been fourteen months since the side effects from my cerclage appeared and there has been slow improvement for me as well. What is most significant is that I no longer have the pulsing white light in my peripheral vision under flourescent lighting; now it's more of a blurriness (kind of like the ripple-effect of looking into a swimming pool) that's not debilitating. I no longer dread entering my office where flourescent lighting abounds. I still see the white pulsing light when I leave a bright setting for a dark room, but it seems to settle down more quickly than previously and it really doesn't bother me. I'm guardedly optimistic that these symptoms will disappear. At least they are now bearable.

If you are still following this group could you please provide an update on your symptoms?

Hi Rose, I got PRP 3 weeks ago in one eye because of lattice degeneration and I am seeing a flickering of light and seeing stars in the peripheral vision of my eye. I have gone back twice and the retina specialist says everything is fine. I am not sure if it's my anxiety causing this or it's its really a medical problem. All I can do now is hope that this will subside over time.

I know this is quite and old thread but maybe better for me as most of you's have gone through eye laser surgery and are now that bit further on. Did the floaters go away and the flashing.I had a tear and a haemorrhage and got laser surgery 2 weeks ago..I have now got a big blob floating in the eye plus a veil of little black spots..the Ophthalmologist said this should disappear in time. I am very worried that may not be the case and will interfere with my driving which I haven't started yet. Any thoughts on this would be of great help .

yes I have done the same retinal laser treatment for few weeks ago I still see the small lights in the sky or even I look to white wall maybe I have done the surgery nearly future maybe that's why I still see them and the black things when I move my eyes .....but try to visit your eyes specialist every month so you will not worry about it that much...and never get regret that you did the surgery which would cause another problems in future if you did not have the retinal laser treatment

Hello rose. I had laser photocoagulation for degeneration in the peripheral retina. The fact is that, after 340 laser shots, sometimes I see some black dots when I blink and I also have flashes and midiosopcias (floats), but what worries me the most is that sometimes I see some black dots that appear and disappear. and I also see points of light when I change rooms or stop watching TV. I would ask you to answer me or someone else to answer me and tell me if someone else has had side effects after the laser to treat detachment or tears

    Hello all!

First of all, I'm from Brazil and I speak Portuguese, so I'm sorry about my English, I'm still learning.

I also did the photocoagulation 2 weeks ago and after the procedure I'm seeing a lot of flashes lights. I have went to five different retinal specialists and all of them said that my eyes are healthy. Nobody knows why I'm seeing these flashes after the photocoagulation then I would like to hear from someone that faced this same situation before if these flashes will go away and how long it will take.

    I'm very worried about it.

    Thanks in advance!

Here's an update about my post-laser cerclage situation.

It has been about 18 months since I had my procedure. I still see a darkish arc in the periphery of my vision when I blink, and still see white flashing lights for maybe 3 to 5 minutes when I enter a dimly-lit room coming from bright sunlight. But compared to how these symptoms were when I first noticed them, they have become barely noticeable (there is no way to properly quantify these symptoms but I'd say they're down to 10% of their peak severity which happened maybe 2 weeks after the procedure), and no longer bother me even when I do notice them.

It was very hard at first coming to terms with the symptoms, not even knowing if they were going to improve at all. It took me 3 months and a psychiatrist's help to recover emotionally. The eye symptoms get better very slowly, but they do improve substantially. The trick is to make the wait more bearable by taking control of your emotions. And to keep in mind that it's either these symptoms or straight up blindness from retinal detachment.

tl;dr: Don't worry, it gets way better! Very slowly though. But in the meantime, stay calm, because it's easier that way.

      Hi Chiccolite,

I had RD with Vitrectomy and 360 laser cerclage back in March. I have the shimmering in periphery plus if I look at the sky I see faint swirly lines.

I also have blurrier mid & up close distance since my surgery as well.

My surgeon is recommending laser to treat peripheral weak areas in my other eye to prevent future RD. I am concerned that this laser would cause blurriness and more shimmering. I do not want to risk an RD however. Since you had laser in both eyes did your eye without detachment have as many side effects or affect on your vision?

      Thanks in advance!

Agree with the specialist. It should go away over time, its similar to looking at the sun in the sky, its a temporary feeling that passes over time.

Om Shanti. Finally I have found an answer to my own as well as several other peoples's question. Let me explain it in detail.

During December 2020, retinal holes were detected in both of my eyes at Sankar Netralaya(Newtown) and Disha Eye Centre(2nd opinion, Barrackpore) at Kolkata, and I was advised to undergo Retinal Laser(Barrage/Pascal laser). I had undergone the laser on 25th December at Disha. Apart from the regular light pain after laser, I had developed a small black patch on my right eye lower right corner. It disappeared after 7 days.

However a new phenomenon had started taking place from 18th January 2021. I started seeing a bright white, small circle moving across the lower right corner of my eye (same place with dark patch) and it disappears within a second or two. It used to happen 2 times a day in the beginning and day by day the count increased and once it reached 17 times a day.

I went for a local eye doctor at KGP and I was advised to immediately go for 360 barrage laser in my right eye. Somehow the appointment for that laser was cancelled.

Around 3rd week of February, I went back to Disha for a follow-up. The same doctor ,who did my laser, asked me to get retina-scan reports. After going through the reports, the doctor told that my retina was perfect and the lights appearing were “clinically insignificant". However, to ensure precaution, I was asked not to lift heavy weights. Rest of the activities can be safely continued.

A very important point mentioned by the doctor is that the word “flashes" should be understood properly and infact my issue was not a flash.

When you see whitelight which is irregular in shape, resembling a lightning strike/flash,(its the pattern of blood vessels), its called a flash. Flash is also accompanied by lots of black floating objects.

If any of these 2 symptoms come into picture, a retina specialist must be consulted.

Some of the things I would like to recommend is that:

In case you feel some similar symptoms, always take a retina scan test rather than directly going for laser.

After the retinal laser, wear the blind black goggles to minimise light on eyes.

Please take full rest for 7 days. Dim/low light as much as possible. No mobile, no laptop.

Keep applying the gel recommended by the doctor(Nevonac in my case) for 1.5 months. My mistake: the assistant told me 6 days by mistake but the report had 6 weeks written. So applied 6 days. This gel helps in the healing post laser as well as keeping retina intact.

Don't go for vigorous eye movement and dont do any exercise or running or anything like that fot atleast 1.5 months.

Make sure you give maximum attention to ur eyecare.

Glad that I found his thread. I had lattice degeneration and my doctor recommended Laser to make sure I don't have retina tear. I did the laser like 2 weeks ago, and the follow up check up seems fine as well. But since yesterday, I notice that there is a small white light passing through the bottom of my right eye, it lasts only 1 sec, but it happens quite often, every half to 1 hour. Do I need to get an immediately follow up or can wait for next follow up 8 weeks later?

I had a streak of light kind of like that. It was like a shooting star that kind of arced through part of my vision. It turned out to be a retinal tear.

      Hi Riverhorse,

I am in need of laser to strengthen my lattice per my retinal surgeon since I had a detachment in my other eye.

Have your flashes gone away yet?

Also, did you have any blurriness in your vision, especially up close?

I feel like I have those symptoms in my other eye and am concerned it was due to the laser not the operation.

Please let me know your experience.

      Thanks!
