White flickering light after laser for retinal tear

I posted on here a few weeks ago about a black/gray spot I kept seeing after the retinal tear laser surgery. I saw on the doctor's notes it was the photocoagulation. I also saw that I have lattice degeneration which I'm assuming contributed to the tear. I am not seeing the black spot so much anymore, unless I blink or change rooms with different lightings, but now in its place I am constantly seeing a flashing light that looks white especially in dim lighting. It extends to the side of my eye as well, which I'm assuming is from where the laser was also done. I went to the retinal specialist and said everything looked fine and this could be a side effect of the laser and it generally goes away within a couple months. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with the laser and if it went away? this has been very disorienting for me and I have been fearing losing my peripheral vision. I'm not sure if I am actually losing peripheral vision or if it just feels that way since I have this constant flickering now on the side. I know it's better to be safe than sorry, but a part of me wishes I never did this laser bc its been causing so many issues for me and supposedly the tear had scar tissue from healing itself. If anyone has had any experience with this and would like to share I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I am happy and sad to read all of this. My eye was lasered for 2. retinal tears. last week. I have like a water type looking line that is worse along with black lines and spots that won't quit. My vision is definitely worse since lasering...with black rain and I have seen gold glitter when closing my eye. I also feel like my visual field has shrunk particularly my peripheral I hope it goes away.

I am happy to learn I am not alone. My left retina detached by the macular at 30...a scleral buckle, silicone oil vitrectomy, a reverse for both of those surgeries, and cataract surgery has left me with 20/100 with glasses in that eye. While all that was going on I had a blood vessel occlude in my right eye which left a blind spot and black spider web as I call it in that eye. I had to get eye injections to stop the vessel from leaking and growing.

In the right eye Lattice degeneration was present and I was scared to laser it. Recently, I had 2 tears and they were lasered. It feels as though my right eye is now worse visually speaking then my left. I have been highly myopic and have a mother and grandfather who have had detached retinas at 45 and 50. I still have not had the lattice taken care of as the other lasering was an emergency situation, but I do not think I can have more scars clouding my retina along with another cartarct...and I cannot afford another detachment. As it stands I am 34 with the eyes of a 90 year old and 2 small children.

Food for thought...my mothers retina specialist mentioned thin retinas being a problem for people with pale eyes...I wonder how many of you have light eyes...mine are blue. If any of you have had great visual improvement with time I would love to know. I see my specialist in a few days. I am very sad anyone else has had retinal issues so young as I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. However, it is comforting some to know I an not alone.

Anyone on this thread have laser to strengthen lattice? I had retinal detachment and surgery on right eye due to lattice. Surgeon is recommending laser for left eye to prevent future detachment. My concern is whether this will affect my vision since my left eye has very good vision and I do not want to have that compromised.

Any insight you could give would be helpful.

how is it now ? has the flickering stopped and what about those floaters? I am also having the same problem and i worried as hell please tell me it would be much appreciated.

How are you coping now? Have you tried darkened lenses/ sunglasses to help?

I completely understand how hard this is - I am also having exactly the same problem.

I hope you are coping. The flashing I am told should wear off overtime or maybe it is neuro adapting that makes it less noticeable.

Keep talking as I think sharing your experience helps as you are not alone

I found this via a Google search as I have the flashing in the periphal vision following laser after a retina tear, which had detached slightly. I would describe it initially as a ripple of water effect but now most certainly as a flashing light in my periphal vision at the point the laser was applied to my retina. I am also left with quite a few floaters - the combination of the two makes it very hard to relax and be yourself again. I have seen a few ophthalmologists and they all say the same thing - you have to now get on with things and overtime your brain will neuro adapt and it will become less distracting. Easier said than done.

I also had a vitrectomy in my right eye as same thing happened to me 8 months ago in the right eye. Unfortunately it was diagnosed as an ocular migraine despite the fact I am in mid 40s and short-sighted. The vitrectomy successfully reattached my retina and I havecfull sight but I do have a wave in my vision so it has not restored vison to what it was before.

Anyway I have to move forward but it is hard.

I am going to try a few things to try and help.

    1. Photochromic lenses to reduce light and help with the floaters in certain environments.
    2. Pineapple - so I am going to try eating pineapple daily as there was a study (published) that claims it helps reduce floaters. There is some science behind this and given it can't do any harm then I will try for a few months and see if it helps.
    3. More an interesting fact - but following dilation of pupils from an eye examine you will notice your floaters disappear for several hours. This is due to more light entering eye and the shadow from floaters is not cast on back of retina. I have read certain people are dilating their own pupil but I am not sure that is safe or healthy long-term but I do understand why they would do it, if only to get a temporary relief.

Although science and technology has made great strides in all areas of healthcare you can't help feel that we are lagging behind where it needs to be in opthalmology given the impact to your life this has.

I certainly think talking to people helps who have similar experiences and so I am posting here as a way to introduce myself and very happily will chat more and share my experiences and anything that works or helps me cope better.

Hi Everyone! I am so glad I stumbled upon this thread. In 2011 I had a retina detachment in my left eye- starting my life long issue with anxiety. I had a seclural buckle, vitrectomy, gas bubbles, cataract surgery, YAG- you name it! I had not had issues for years until my pregnancy this year. My right eye tore 2 weeks ago. I had the laser treatment, but i still have residual flashes which are terrifying! They are worse at night- do they go away in time? They dont help my newly found anxiety again! I find myself obsessing and checking my vision and peripheral often...its so terrifying. If a new floater appears, I panic. I wish we could simulate what we see so people understand.

Also, random question...I ran into a natural path doc who asked me if I drank diet coke! I lived on diet coke back in the day....I had not had it since my detachment but then I got pregnant, and aquired gestational diabetes! So...I drank diet coke this year....I find it ironic that when I started diet drinks and sugar free ice pops this happened. Are any of you diet coke or aspartame consumers? i know doctors state nearsightedness or trauma but I find this so strange and thought I would ask and share.

Eye sight issues are no joke, I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy. I am with you on this journey and it feels so good to find a thread of similarities. Thank you!

just see your surgeon they are obligated to follow up with you.... dont mess with pseudoscience a naturopathic medicine.

get regular exams with a retina specialist and every time you see a new shape of a floater go in. The key is to look for a new shapes and positions… Because Some of the floaters will remain so it’s hard to tell if it’s something to be alarmed about… I get it.

I’ve had laser for retinal tears and detachment surgery… Seeing floaters after surgery and or laser, is very normal -- it can last months and be sporadic.

****However you really need to follow up with your retina surgeon that did the surgery and they need to follow up on you continually. **

having issues with my Ipad lol tried to post earlier

FLICKERS or glitter will remain after treatment ......years later....especially when you are tired, on computer long or hungry....

if your surgeon sees you and follows up you should be ok and learn to live with glitter.

I still get random glitter and random black tiny ball floaters and weird white circle with black outline circles ....

just see your surgeon continually for OCT scans and follow ups... they should follow up every few months even after you heal .

Hello. I know this thread is dated but I just wanted to share my situation. I had a retinal tear back in late Feb of this year. I had the laser repair procedure on 2/23. Had a black area in my peripheral vision that was somewhat noticeable for about 3 days and then it subsided (or I just got used to it). Everything was fine after that (or so I thought). I went for my one month follow up and all results came back okay. Then, in mid-April, I began to notice a flickering sensation in the peripheral of my right eye where I had the retinal tear/laser treatment. It slowly became more noticeable for about a week or two and hasn't subsided. It's the worst during the day, especially if I go from a bright environment to a more dimly lit environment. Like many have stated, it's most pronounced when I go from outside to indoors. I went back to the retina specialist and she said everything looks fine. I went for a second opinion and got the same answer. Also, both told me that it has nothing to do with the laser procedure but I find that extremely hard to believe, especially after reading this thread. Just wondering how everyone is doing and if this extremely distracting condition has subsided/improved for most. Note that it's much less bothersome in the evening and I don't notice it at all in the morning when I wake up (for about 45 min to an hour). Also, I do have an appointment with a Neuro Ophthalmologist in early June. Has anyone else seen someone in this sub specialty and if so, what were your results/outcomes? Thanks all!

Wow, I'm so happy to discover this thread. I've with suffered "shimmering" lights and a single "candle" light after having laser treatment. I'm very sad others are experience these issues but it's great to know I'm not alone.

I was interested to know if others find it particularly noticeable when looking at the sky? For me the whole sky is a mass of shimmer lights. It's like a super extreme blue field entoptic phenomenon.

P.S. Mine definitely improved after about 2 months. It's been about 10 months now and I haven't noticed further improvement but I've renewed hope after hearing from others.

    hello

i have gone for barrage laser on 4th july 22.

A brief history, on 2016 it came to my knowledge that i am having a cystic degeneration on my right eye, -8D.

so i was advised by my ophthalmologist to be on a regular follow up every 6-8 months. ( He is a senior Vitero retina surgeon, and he told me about future complications that i might develop lattice, or hole. so if that happens they could seal it )

Recently I got barrage done for my lattice. (superiorly)

But after 2 weeks i am facing some kind of light flickering at my lower periphery, n 3-4 times a day i feel some kind of light rolling, of course that freaks me out too.

    After

that i was feeling ver depressed, sad and anxious, so i thought of calling a another doctor and explaining all my symptoms, he told me n explained me , also he told me the doctor who did my laser is a very good and a well known vitero retinal surgeon in India. i also gave a called to one of my senior, who is in aiims . he told me nothing to worry, also he explained my that it will take time to heal n because i got my laser done superiorly, i am getting those lights opposite to that. I Am 80% relived now . i trust god. n i will be visiting again in Sept.

I know I am late to the party here but hoping someone is still following because this is the first board I have found that seems to address what i am dealing with.

I had two retinal detachments in my left eye in 2019. The second was macula off so that eye is pretty much useless. I had a retinal tear in my right eye about three weeks ago which was repaired with laser. Follow ups show all is well. About a week after the treatment I began to notice a light that moved quickly across the bottom of my vision. I would not describe is as a flash. it is more like a sweep of dim light. it happens 10-20 times a day and is gone as quickly as it came. Seems it often occurs when there is a change in the light level but happens at other times as well.

Since this is pretty much the only eye I have, it is very stressful. My vision seems fine but it is hard to ignore this . I am somewhat relieved when the retina specialist confirms that everything looks good, but am still spending a lot of time worrying . Just wondering if this matches anyone else's experience.

Thanks for reading this . Unless of course I am only talking to myself. Certainly wouldn't be the first time.

My right eye had a large 2-3 degree tear (after PVD posterior vitreous detachment) and they lasered it ten days ago (and the left one four days ago as both eyes have lattice degeneration). I started getting strobe like lights at peripheral on right this weekend - praying it doesnt detach the retina (have Peripheral Vitreous Detachment now). Also an RN so yes this is terrifying!
