Whole body muscle weakness/atrophy on right side

Posted , 57 users are following.

My symptoms are below:

-Mid 2006- Felt right leg week when I am exercising. Felt right hand weak and fine tremor.

-Did all possible tests and MRI,EMG, everything normal in 2008.

-2006-2017 - I let it go and nothing was bothering.

-But meanwhile all the length I have observed that my right side of the body was little weak in terms of muscle strength and muscle mass.

-I could able to do all the things and can able to do even now.

-But now whole my right side has a little less mass, face, shoulders, trunk hip, glutes, thigh , leg and foot.

-Little that it is not yet innterfering in the daily activities.

-Concerned, I went to neurologist.

-EMG done and it is normal.

-Neuro ordered blood tests.

- midly elevated calcium, aldolase, liver enzymes, album and positive ANA with < 1:80.

-ANA is positive but titer is normal (< 1:80)

-Planning to meet the neuromuscular specialist next month.

-Connecting all dots together till now, I am just wondering what this condition might be?

Given that it is present from long time and I could function normally now with normal EMG, can ALS be ruled out?

Thought this could be polymyositis but I have the weakness and atrophy mosly on one side of the body.

Pleas let me know your thoughts

Im going through something similar. Ive had nerve tests that all cone up negative. The possibilities that ive read about is glute amneisia, possible frozen diaphrahm, and something to do with postural restoration about our brain not translating fully when walking so we arent putting weight on that leg and that whome side of the body is basically just along for the ride. Im battling to breath everyday as my right side atrophies. I hope you get an answer, if you do dont forget about me!!! best of luck

    hi all

just checking back on this group. has any one found any answers for their one side atrophy issues. my problems with muscle mass loss on the right side of my body continue. it seems to progress slowly but it is progressing. my right side of the trouser is loose, right shirt sleeve is loose and not to mention the muscle twitching which keeps coming back every now and then predominantly on the right side. have any of y'all any updates on your condition? there are days when it gets really scary and worrisome.

    your response is appreciated.

    thanks !

Nobody visits this thread anymore. I fear it may be because they found out the condition and are sour (rightfully so) enough where they don't want to come back. I for instance have been having this problem as well. It started on my lower left leg and went all the way up to the top of my head. This includes my bones/muscles/and who knows what else. It seems as though everything is affected by this. My gums and hair are less on my left side compared to my right. I've been Diabetic for a long time (over 30 years). This started happening around 2 years ago. I noticed that when I drank liquor and smoked weed a few months ago when this was only on my left side; I woke up the very next day and my whole right side shrunk OVER-NIGHT. Like W-T-F. My right side has shrunk but is still more solid than my left. This st is so crazy because before I started having this issue I had no real health problems regardless of my poor habit of drinking liquor/smoking weed for the past 10 years. I stopped for about 7 months mid-ish 2020 but went back and did it again for September - December of 2020. I stopped again and it's been 25-ish days. My doctor says my spine is curved to the left slightly. I can see my back's oddities in the mirror (even though I don't trust him); so, I can agree with him on that. I also take thyroid medication in addition to insulin. I used to be strong, Mr. America strong etc. Now I'm getting weak and pathetic. When this first started happening around 2018; I remember my blood sugar getting low at work and I'd collapse on my left leg (weak side that was the first to start weakening) while dangerously low. I believe it started then, and the shrinking followed later on. It's so strange how it's like someone cut me in half vertically and each side is affected at different times. I did have my left leg having tremors (lower part) while I went to bed in the summer of 2019. I thought this was due to alcohol and I think alcohol triggered it. Once I stopped drinking the tremors stopped. The tremors were present in the summer of '19 for about two-three months. I was drinking heavily then and blamed it on that. I suppose the alcohol simply pushed the symptoms to more obvious views. Either way, this st is scary as fk and I'm p****d that my doctors don't see the threat (or they pretend not to). I've been trying to get help for a long time. I lifted weights the 7 months that I stopped drinking/smoking and I became stronger and faster (I ran on the treadmill). But, it was a struggle to exercise for some reason; because, I felt off balance with my left side being so much different than my right. When I bench pressed (I could barely bench press 80 lbs. starting again [I used to be able to bench press over 250 lbs. 7 years ago]; I got up to 185 lbs. on bench press for about five reps x 5 sets) I noticed my left arm would be cocked at an angle while struggling to push the weight up while my right arm was straight forward. Possibly due to my spine being twisted to the left (if that's the case); or, simply because of my weakened state of the left side compared to right. Either way, I stopped exercising Sept. 2020 and drank/smoked weed from then to Dec. 2020 and now I quit again because I can't afford to lose anymore of my health. I noticed as well back when I was weight lifting in the summer of '2020 that after a while (about four-five weeks into it) I was still shrinking on my left side even though I was getting smaller. I'd wake up and feel my left shoulder blade in the back smaller etc. St is crazy how you go to sleep one night and wake up shrunken. Even though I'm not someone prone to depression I've given up on doing anything beside my job. I just come home and sit around looking at screens 'cause my reality is that I'm going to be dead soon from this st, or in a wheel chair, bed-ridden etc. I lost the muscle on the top of both feet. My hands are less muscular/smaller bones etc. St sucks >.< Nobody will help me!! I did get a neurology test as well. The doctor claimed my muscle and nerve test came back normal. I also got an M.R.I. of my brain and top of spinal cord that came back normal. Ya right. If I was normal I wouldn't be decaying like this. Help!

Adding more. I noticed as well that the back of my rib cage (at least It seems like this is the area) has been cracking slightly while sitting down in my computer chair if I twist to the left a little bit etc. It's so strange. I also was having pain under my rib etc. Of course I have drank/smoked weed for 11 years (recently quit for 7 as mentioned; and am quitting again now wholeheartedly), so that could be a possibility for my despair. I am Diabetes Type-1 and my blood sugars have always been in good control (A1C spectacular every time according to the doctors). I will say this though, in the past year it's been impossible to get good numbers in the morning for the most part. Been waking up at 150-200 normally. It seems my insulin is tapering off (long-lasting of course) quicker then it should. For instance, If I do my insulin and check myself 8-9 hours after I'm often a good number. If I check myself 10-11 hours after I'd be in the 150-200 range like my blood sugar is shooting up abnormally for no known reason. Possibly in connection to what is happening to me. Long lasting insulin should be working for 10-12 hours according to the Diabetic physicians. Even so, I shouldn't be shooting up that fast if it isn't working. I've also been looking at people more often in their physique etc. for obvious reasons. I notice almost everyone I look at on TV or in-person; their cheeks push out more and are protruding more on the left side on everyone I look at. I'm the opposite now due to my shrinkage (slow death); my right side sticks out more but it still isn't as much as it should be. I used to have a full face, puffy cheeks etc. because I have always had a chubby face compared to my body (not extremely abnormal chubby; but, chubbier than the average). The area under my eyes are sunken in more. My penis stopped getting morning erections in early March of 2019. Like...I used to wake up with raging erections no matter how many times I used to the day prior. Then all of a sudden It just stopped happening and my penis has been broken since (penis, along with all my other body parts I'm sure). I used to have a penis close to 7 inches and thicker than normal; now it's lost size and is slightly under 6 inches and I have to manually touch it to get it to increase in size; even then, it's a broken erection and not worth s**t. My testicles have shrunken as well; they used to be large enough where I'd have to spread my legs while sitting to not aggravate them, now I can cross my legs like it's nothing. I still have a sex drive; I just don't have the weapon to use it with anymore! My left buttocks/hip is significantly smaller so some of my clothing slip as someone else indicated in here. Lastly, I got my testosterone checked before I started exercising in Spring 2020. It was deemed low. Then I got it checked again after 7 months of exercising and it was deemed "normal;" but, barely normal, barely above the minimum number. I used to have excessive testosterone levels. I'm listing all of this information because any piece could be relevant and I desperately want at least an answer, and in a good world a fix.

Sorry for the triple reply. I forgot to add this, I know this has a direct relation with what is going on with me (us). My knuckles on top of my fingers are EXTRA wrinkly and nasty. Like they are sinking inward. At first my right knuckles were normal and my left were like this; once my right side became infected with this defective health condition my right knuckles turned ugly, wrinkly, sunk in and wrinkly. I know these doctors know what we're going through. It's all about money in the medical industry. Want us to suffer until we need emergency help a.k.a. spending way more money than if It were fixed or treated when it first started happening. I have no faith I will be helped!

I have to say your negativity and assuming "everyone here is dead" surely wont help you or any of us. Have you personally gotten a call from their loved ones saying they have died? like come on now.

all I know is Ive found 2 or 3 other people on Facebook experiencing this and were trying to figure it out. one thing we all have in common is long standing digestive issues. You can say you didnt have health issues before this but you literally just said you are diabetic. Im going to assume if you take a real look back you probably dont have perfect digestion either and havent for awhile. This could be some kind of neuropathy from insulin resistance I don't know. wouldn't make much sense though as its effecting bone and soft tissue not just muscle an nerve. my right ear is softer an smaller which is just cartilage.

for me I lost a massive amount of weight after extreme stress an noticed it then. as I put weight back on I noticed it more and more then its just gotten worse an worse. I'm still tryin though. dealing with my digestion taking supplements and working on better sleep better diet. you're not going to get anywhere with your everyone is dead attitude.

You sound too sensitive to be on the internet. What I said wasn't anything to get offended over. Also, I have Type-1; not Type-2, Type-1 is not insulin resistance.

    Hi All.

Its nice to know i'm not alone in this world with mg problems. After abusing adderall, alcohol, and weed, while starving myself, I eventually hit 135 pounds. I was 6'0 and 20 years old. I slept on a couch everyday on my left side while almost curled up. I began to notice atrophy in my rectum and penial region first. I thought I had an std at first as I could tell it also affected my scrotum and that which is attached. I wasted practically a year before i began to notice it was also my hip, trunk shoulder, neck, and face that were also "shrinking." After no luck w/ the std thing my pcp essentially assumed i was a hypochondriac and was basically worrying myself into symptoms. Another half a year went by and i went back, they again told me i did not have anything "wrong" with me and suggested I go to a chiropractor. The chiropractor saw nothing wrong w/ me except that after every adjustment is was as if the first one never happened. He suggested I might also have a connective tissue disorder. Because when i breathe it feels as If i dont have enough room for

my lung. I am now 21 y/o going on 22 very shortly. I went back to the doctor recently to see if he could help find something wrong, but after his negative diagnosis i finally let it all out and cried in front of him for about 3 minutes. Idk if it was out of pity at this point but he allowed me to have a ct scan done of my left trunk to see if they could find anything. My follow up appointment is in two days. Besides that i have not had any brain trauma that I know of But i do have pectus excavatum, which is a shrinkage of the sternum. I have not stopped abusing drugs unfortuantely but i am at least done abusing adderall. I gained enough weight when I was working out, ending up at 160 pounds but then I noticed i couldnt lift w/ my left arm Like i used to when i was gaining weight back (gained the weigh back while experiencing left atrophy below the trunk) reasonably during this time i found no head way with my legs despite working them out. My clothes and pants do not fit like they used to and i can feel my gums atrophying inside my mouth. I've even have had braces back on (for the third time in my life.) I will look into a vascular doctor or the possibility of ALS. Thank you everyone for your comments. Personally i am scared because I only have my life ahead of me and don't want to be taken from my parents, due to being an only child. I am everything to them and if i end up leaving this world early I know it will be extremely hard for them because they are the most amazing people I know. My mother is also helping me look into an Internist (doctor who specializes inside the body) Ill update this thread If i make any headway. I wish all of you luck despite where you are at in life.

Any updates? I recently lost more mass in my head/facial region and ever since I've been more constipated and have less of an urge to release fecal matter. I'm stressed 24/7 and can't get this issue out of my head because it has revved up speed in recent times. I stated previously I had nerve testings for my muscles and other such things; normal according to the doctor. I also had an M.R.I. of my brain/top of spine; normal according to doctor. I most recently had an x-ray of my spine and they claimed I had some slight curving of it and slight deterioration of it. Nothing surprising for my age though. I fear for my life and by the signs I'm getting personally I'm going to be another person who "could've been saved;" but, wasn't because people didn't care enough to take my condition urgently. I ask my primary doctor for help and he acts as if I'm in no danger even though he's known me for 20+ years and has seen me diving in health as of late. I fear I'll just have a stroke or heart attack out of nowhere because I keep "losing" matter. I also have ear ringing in my left ear every now and then with such easy triggering. I also can lay on my stomach on the bed and my ears will have that 'woosh-woosh" noise for seconds at a time.

If my nerves are truly fine; my brain is truly fine; my top of spine etc. is truly fine. I suppose the next area to look at is the heart. Possibly my heart is malfunctioned where it is not sending blood/nutrients to the left side of my body properly. I always assume a tumor/cancer is possible as well. I did have a CT scan on my bladder region two years ago at the E.R.; colonoscopy/endoscopy around five years ago and a brain/top of spine M.R.I. recently.

It's getting worse and it's going that direction at a faster rate as of it. I may need to go to the E.R. again to get real attention, even though it's costly as hell. Wouldn't matter if I'm dead from this I guess!

Also, I have lost mass/'matter' in all of the left side of me. This includes the Tragus of the ear...which is simply skin and cartilage. If this was a spine problem, why would it be affecting my face/head/ear? I'm stuck in a mental quicksand because I can't get over how badly I'm sliding downward in health. Hope you all are not getting worse; and hope for all of us that we can find a solution!

Any news from anyone? It's a sad thing to see this thread is a graveyard after so many have posted their rightful concerns. My problem keeps getting worse. I fear it won't stop. Left side is worse than the right. Both sides have lost muscle; bone; gums; hair (left side worse); and even cartilage of my ear. I said this before; I got nerve tests done and they said they came back normal. I got a brain MRI; said it was normal. I have been getting blood tests as well. I hope you all find the problem and can reverse this curse.

Hi there. You can be reassured that you don't have ALS. From 2006 till now with these issues trust me, you would be long gone by now if it was ALS & you certainly wouldn't be able to still perform daily tasks after all that time gone by. Whilst i can't tell you what may be causing your atrophy i can tell you it's not ALS so stop worrying about that one & concentrate more on the more logical things it could be. Good luck in finding a diagnosis.

I've been seeing doctors now for the past seven years with the same issue--R side atrophy. Yes, my neck has some complications (extra vertebrae, reverse curve, extra cervical rib, etc.), but it would be reasonable for only my arm/shoulder to be affected if this was the root issue. Visits to Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, a physician at NY Hospital for Special Surgeries and numerous visits to Caring Medical in Ft. Myers and a sports rehab specialist in Sarasota did not produce an answer. The atrophy is now causing scoliosis and all my joints are compromised making it a bit more of a challenge to keep exercising. Here are a few suggestions for symptoms: 1) I've started using a tens unit in the morning; 2) I am purchasing a swim spa to keep muscles moving with little impact; 3) I'm working with EGOSCUE, a type of non-medical musculoskeletal program that provides exercise movements to strengthen and/or stretch specific areas of the body. Both my husband and I have been very happy with the regiment they suggested. There are certified Egoscue therapists all over the country. There is also a book and video that can be purchased if you want to check it out.

With regard to testing... I agreed to have a brain MRI with contrast at Mayo. They also found nothing, but the following day on the elevator as I was leaving, I had a sudden migraine headache. It took about three months for me to get back to normal. Subsequently, I read that Gadolinium, the contrast agent often used, can have this affect. I will NEVER agree to a contrast agent again. I've had 3 EMGS, numeous MRIs (including upright MRI), facet injections, prolotherapy, accupuncture, laser accupuncture and more.

Another symptom management help came from CRANIAL-SACRAL THERAPY. It is a type of massage, and not invasive since you remained fully clothed as they work.Few massage therapists have completed many courses in this type of massage, but it helped my muscles relax and gave me symptom relief.
