Why am I still in so much pain after metal plate and screws removed from wrist

I severely broke my left wrist in October last year and I had a block and they put a metal plate and screws in. As the block wore off at 3am I was crippled in pain n had to go straight to a&e. They kept me in for 3 days on a drip with morphine and my arm held in the air. Worst pain I have ever ever felt. They sent me home and was on morphine for a few weeks. I was having Physio but was getting a lot of pain still and shooting pains and burning. There was a lump sticking out my wrist which I thought was a loose screw but they wouldn’t do anything coz it was too soon, but When I went to see the consultant again in feb he said it’s the plate close to the skin and it had to come out and was going to investigate nerve pain. 2 days later I was put to sleep and and they cut the same scar and took it out. I thought all my problems was going to be solved. It’s worse this time than before. And also now have a numb patch too. When I went back for 6 week check they said they took it out but there was nerves trapped in scar tissue so they deliberately cut them.  He said could be numb forever n will have to wait n see. But I’m still in a lot of pain and it’s now April. The scar is sensitive n find it hard to massage n still getting shooting pain n burning n not able to use it properly specially anything with a bit of weight. All along the scar if I press it even slightly on the bone it’s really painful still.  I was on amitriptyline but now gabapentin and just don’t know if it’s still early days or should be this painful still? Hoping someone can help. I just keep being told it’s early days but it’s not getting any better.

Gabapentin can take a minimum of five days to start working and almost ten days for some people. You have to take your doses at the same time each day. That is important. And missing a dose can make it hard. This is a med that needs to build up in your body. You may also need your dosage up.

As for your scar, being sensitive is normal. My surgery was in February and I still have sensitivity along my scar. If I touch my ankle, I do have bone pain. Or a get painful shocks or muscle spasms. Ice packs are amazing.

It also sounds like you had a rough time with this and your body may not be adapting to the trauma and it may take extra time for your body to adapt to everything.

Bio freeze is an amazing cream that helps with nerve pain. I have fibromyalgia and use it lots.
