Why do I have pain at night sleeping?

I am two 1/2 weeks post ankle surgery. I went in for a Talar dome lesion which was removed & holes drilled in the bone for healing. The surgeon also ended up removing other inflamed cartilage & a bone spur.

I was told to bring in my old boot, which I was put in after surgery. I removed it because I cant sleep in it & it hurts to have on. I was told to be non-weight bearing for 5-6 weeks, so hubby got me a knee cart.

I cant do the pain medicine & every time I go to bed, my leg, ankle, and bottom of my foot start hurting so bad. I go back tomorrow to have the stitches removed.

How long does this pain last or is there anything I can do to help so I can sleep?

Heya, I've just had ORIF surgery 6 weeks ago on my ankle that has four breaks. I've just gotten out of the cast yesterday and now I'm in a moonboot for a few weeks.

My experience over the last 6 weeks has been that I'm generally pretty good during the day. Yes I felt discomfort with the cast but I wouldn't call it pain. Around 6pm I could feel it coming on and my foot would swell and get hot despite elevating it and get quite painful (especially nerve pain). My sleeping over the last 6 weeks has been miserable I won't lie, a few nights I didn't sleep at all.

I'm still feeling pain now even 6 weeks out and it doesn't feel like it's improved a whole lot but when I look back I realise it has. I was using pain meds so I went from using them every day and night to just every night and then eventually the odd night. Now in the boot the pain has shot up a bit and I'm back to panadol during the day but I anticipated that. For me the first two weeks were the hardest.

As far as giving myself relief from the night pain I actually found icing my cast and keeping it elevated to be more effective than pain meds. It sounds weird to ice your cast but after a few mins you can begin to feel it. I would do this several times during the evening. I also found sleeping with the fan on directed at my foot also helped with the discomfort and the itchy-ness and kept my foot cool.
