Why do I have to stop my HRT before my hysterectomy

Posted , 3 users are following.

In December 2015 I had two large cysts removed along with my ovaries and Fallopian tubes. I was on climagest prior to the surgery. Now I'm on an oestrogen only one with a mirena coil fitted.

One of the cysts was 'serious borderline tumour' the surgeon found endometriosis in my stomach wall too. So on 9th March 2016 I am having a full hysterectomy, including removal of the endometriosis and some of my 'fatty skirt'

I've been told I need to come off my HRT for 4 weeks prior to surgery but not really told why??? I get horrendous night sweats already whilst in the HRT Lord knows how I'll cope not being on it.

The reason you've been advised to stop your HRT is to prevent the risk of thrombosis. I can't really understand why you didn't ask why at your appointment because I'm sure your consultant would have happily explained why

To be honest I was a bit dazed, I only had my surgery in December, to then be told 4 weeks after the op that you need a full hysterectomy (7 weeks after that appointment) was a bit much to take in.

      I'm sure with hindsight I would've asked, but I didn't, that's why I thought I'd ask on here.

I may just go to my GP and get a proper answer

You probably be OK as you will still have the effects of the drug inside you when I came off it I thought I would be worse but wasn't when you have had the surgery you will need to go on a orsogen only one it probably effects the surgery anyway good luck and don't over do it the first few weeks I was in a lot of pain the first two weeks of hysterectomy but got through it had a very good surgeon

Thanks Caroline. The pain is a worry, did you have key hole surgery?? I'm hopefully having it keyhole and hope to be back at work about 3 weeks after my op (obviously if I have to have open surgery, I'll have to rethink the timescale)
