Why does ALCOHOL make pain go away?

Hi. Why is it a couple of glasses of wine can make all my IBS related pain go away? And for the most part for the rest of the day/evening?

Is ibs all in my head or is there a medical explanation?

Ps I'm not taking a bender here. I usually enjoy a standard size glass or three of an evening..

Thank you

I get IBS once or twice a week. A shot of whisky, diluted with water, works wonders. I wondered whether there is an effect on bacteria. I don't drink enough, I think, to settle down the nerves.

Wine (red and white) as well as some beers can relieve stomach pain because they relax the stomach walls. This is a well known and studied phenomenon. Funny enough, higher grade alcohols do not help, like whiskey or higher proof alcoholic beverages.

Wine is probably not for every IBS patient, but it has helped me numerous times to the point where I have been worried if I'm an alcoholic because I do depend on drinking to stay healthy. Yesterday I was all swollen and in pain, took some white wine and today my stomach is like nothing happened. I had not had a drink for only 2 days and symptoms were already coming back.

Drink in moderation because alcoholic beverages are known to cause cancer, but a couple of glasses every other day will certainly help some. Don't buy low quality wines though, they don't need to be expensive, but if it's too oaky it probably won't help, as much as if it has too many sulfites or if it's chemically brewed.
